Circoloco, perhaps a circo dream, as a night of magic and music ensued. Verboten, on point as always.

“These are the moments we live for.” I turned around and said that to John Perez, who runs Verboten, as Davide unexpectedly steps up to the turntables and plays one last beautiful song. Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann had just finished their after hours set together at the Morgan but people were still lingering on below chanting for one more. As the last track goes on, the beat and rhythm was powerful enough for everyone to reach into their last pockets of energy and simply go wild like it was their last morning to live. In the movie “Groove” (2000), which I often reference, one of the characters asks Ernie why he goes through so much effort to throw these parties. He responds, “The nod.”

“Happens to me at least once every party. Some guy comes up to me and says “Thank you for making this happen… I needed this. This really meant something to me.” And they nod… and I nod back.” – Ernie, Groove (2000)

It’s not every party I feel I can say that, and there are parties that come and go. Circoloco, however, will stay with me amongst my memorable nights. I added a simple thank you of my own for an incredible 14 hours.

6:30pm I arrive at Beekman Beer Garden. So it wasn’t 80 degrees when the party started, however the couches in the sand and the sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge and everyone in their summery clothing reminded me of WMC. I miss Miami nearly everyday but the open air tent and the East River brought a nostalgia mixed with familiarity. I was amidst good people, good music, and good weather. After all, majority of the people there were probably down in Miami as well. Ravi Deejay and Stadenco brought familiar grooves into my ears as I waited for the place to fill up.

By the time Davide and Matthias had walked on stage, the sun had already set beyond the Hudson River, and the pinkish tinge had already left the skies. There is something about the night that changes the ambiance and the crowd was restless. By now, the entire Beekman was filled with circus revelers. The tent was was packed and alive with movement and the sands behind housed the party goers that spilled out from the tent. And then the speakers spoke the truth that the CDJs told them.

Clever drops and great samples and the power of two minds and two pairs of hands is what makes Davide and Tanzmann quite the team. Their skill and experience shows through as my friends and I would often look at each other in disbelief in the tracks they lay down. ”Now this is good!” Earlier in the night I was chastised for conserving my energy and keeping my moves conservative. With these two behind the decks, there was no holding back. Neither did the crowd.

Having spent some time in the Chicago underground this past year, I had yet to see DJ Sneak. You cannot mention Chicago House without having his name come up. He is an integral part of the rise and evolution of what us sticklers would call “Chicago House” to differentiate from the trend of commercial progressive people loosely and carelessly call house music. Recently he has been on EDM news with his “attacks” on Swedish House Mafia. Stand down, SHM, because his CD binder alone could knock all three of you out at once. Each CD marked and graffitied, the binder was a treasure cove of sound in itself. As impressive as his binder was his actual DJ skills. Wow. I would like to find another man who has the guts to lay down some real SOUL music in their set – with timing so impeccable, few could pull off the a cappellas he dropped. DJ Sneak dropped hidden gems that only the eighties could reminisce of.

In a general comment on a lot of music that has been coming out in our field, a lot of producers remember the energy but forget the soul. Energy burns out, but soul feeds the body for so much longer. What keeps us on the dance floor, is the ability to lose ourselves into the nuances that sound brings. A simple testament to this truth is how certain sets/parties go on for three hours while you have others that go on for ten. In this case, fourteen. I’m not here for the sprint, I’m dedicated to the marathon.

As Andrew Grant finished off the first half of the night with a heightened energy, all of us househeads knew that 2:30am is simply when the night truly begins. There is literally nothing extremely exciting about the decor of the Morgan. In reality it is somewhat of a dungeon-like brick space. The more underground and uninteresting the space, it seems that the music sounds truer, amplified by the gathering of people for the same purpose. We are all connected by the vibrations of the bass.

DJ Sneak along with Davide and Matthias played another round of sets at the Morgan. Perhaps because of what I explained above, these sets hit me with a harder ambition to dance. The cover of darkness can do many wonders to set a mood. The rooms, packed to the brim feeding off of the DJs energy and vice versa is something amazing even to witness. Why else would Davide step up for that one last track? It’s the love for the music.

And that my friends, is the moment I live for.

You know it’s a good night when you don’t leave until 7:30am. And now every time I prepare to go District 36, I know it’s going to be a late night, but a great night. Without exception, Cinco de Mayo delivered without a doubt. Rumors are holding true so far that this was the last techno show for a while, with the onset of summer. Bummer because I know I would love some hard minimal and techno to fill my summer nights.

Around 2am, DJ Vibe was seriously heating up the decks. With a perfectly numbered crowd – not too many nor too few – hitting the dance floor, DJ Vibe was clearly reading them well. Not only that, his mixing was quite interesting and unexpected – in a good way. When he held the bass from a track and built up the track for a drop, he never released that heavy bomb that everyone was expecting – instead he slowly built the bass back up until it gradually resumed its normal levels. So here I am standing, waiting for that wonderful techno drop that comes after each break, only it never comes. Normally, this would be frustrating, but DJ Vibe built it up so cleverly it was actually amusing and interesting to see how he would handle each drop.

When Carlo Lio took to the decks, the pace changed as well a clear difference in style. Around 3:30am I noticed the changes, and surely enough Lio had already switched places with DJ Vibe. While DJ Vibe was more subtle in his mixing and carried on a pace that was more fluid in energy changes, Carlo Lio brought in the attitude of what you would expect from a younger DJ – harder, faster. The pace picked up and the entire club was rocking out at 4am in the morning. No plays with the drop, when it came you knew it – hit the dance floor hard and kept the bodies moving.

Last to take up for the morning stretch was Cristian Arango. Keeping up the fast pace, Arango opened with a great track with truth speaking vocals about the state of electronic dance music: DJ Noir’s All About House Music. (Noir’s Africanism is also worth checking out.)

For those who haven’t given District 36 a chance, let me tell you I find it now my home. While a lot of clubs and shows are fun, not every one of them I feel completely happy. Every time I’ve been at D36 it’s been a magical night full of those techno bass drops I so crave to hear, that brighten up my week. Even the design of the club lends itself well to minimal and techno. No judgement, it’s just you and the dance floor and if you aren’t dancing then what are you doing here? Beautiful dancers spotlight the speakers interchanged with dancers in costumes only imagined by the depths of your mind. Just lose yourself in the music, and like Ben Sim’s track says move, move your body dance, dance your body – I want to go back.

Dropped at one point in the night:

Josh Wink returns for quite the housey set at Sullivan Room at another wonderful Verboten party.

The last Verboten show that travels had allowed me to attend was Seth Troxler & Shaun Reeves in December. It was one of the last few shows at the great Good Units, which sadly, is no more. With such a perfect location with the right atmosphere, I had wondered how Verboten was going to remedy the situation. After traipsing around for a few months in the underground deep house scene of Chicago and techno scene in Detroit, I was finally able to make it back to New York to see the new venue their posters have been sporting: Josh Wink at the Sullivan Room.

I would say 75% of a show is the artist, but a good 25% is the location and its atmosphere. The right setting just has to go with the right type of music, to complete the experience. You could argue against me that, well all you need is a warehouse and one light – and I would respond with well, even that setting completes the music as well adding a different dimension to it. Located in the heart of the Village lies Sullivan Room. While I had attended its above ground neighbor, Sullivan Hall, I had never been to its subterranean sibling. Complete with brick arches and a truly underground feel, I had the feeling I was transported to an underground party in Berlin as opposed to being in NYU territory. And it looks like it is no stranger to hosting our best underground acts either.

For Josh Wink, it was returning to a familiar place, having played there before for different parties. Word of his extended set for Verboten had clearly spread because the [treasure] cove was packed. Blue lights tinted an eager crowd that had come to fill every nook and cranny the Sullivan Room can provide. Needless to say, I was won over. Groovy basslines swept through and the main room crowd was just loving it. Packed yes, but nothing that going out for a cigarette [or fresh air] couldn’t remedy before you headed back down to dance the night away.

Wait…Did I just say groovy basslines? When I walked out of the staircase and the soundwaves hit me…I was taken aback. His set was very housey and definitely groovy – a complete contrast to the very minimal set he dropped in Detroit a few months earlier. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. But perhaps I am now seeing a trend among minimal techno artists trying to address the dilemma many people have proposed: there needs to be more soul, more groove in minimal. Personally I am a fan of minimal, and while I can understand the concern, I find it interesting how the concern is addressed at different sets. The change of pace however did not stop me from dancing and from the look of everyone else, it seems they were enjoying the new direction as well.

While I’ve harped on for quite a while how much Good Units will be missed, Josh Wink’s show at Sullivan has helped me put closure on that chapter. Places come, places go – in this case the people still remain – but we’ve just widened our horizons. So far, Verboten has never left me disappointed.

Be sure to check out their upcoming shows here.

Two videos I managed to find just to add some audio visuals my explanation:

And his followers expected nothing less...

The cult following herded Pacha NYC once more, not even a year later, to hear what the unicorn slayer had to say. Always coming in with the harder edge of trance, Schulz’s sets always keep you on your toes. No track that he drops is ever overplayed, keeping his playlist always fresh and educational in new sounds. Perhaps what I admire most is that the majority of tracks that he drops are either his own or off his label Coldharbour recordings (Outsider (Original Mix)). Here and there, others will be thrown into mix like Sander van Doorn’s new track Sander Van Doorn – Chasin (Original Mix). A pleasant and welcome surprise for many of us was the strain of techno tracks he dropped showing he’s not afraid to go there.

While a lot of DJs tend to stop once they hit the 4am mark, not Markus. The last track stopped spinning at 6:15 am and as quickly as Pacha filled up, the dance floor emptied. Quoted as one of the “hard working” djs in DJ Mag top 100 poll, he never stops for his fans. Over the years I have followed his music and I must agree with that statement. Always tweeting tracks on his famous Global DJ Broadcast, he keeps his fans there with him. Barely a few hours after this gig, he was already on his way to Toronto to slay some unicorns up there.

Though he has left us for a little while (those of you will be lucky to be in Miami for WMC or our Detroit readers, he’s coming to Elektricity on April 6th), us New Yorkers will be impatiently waiting until he heads back into Pacha for another bass dropping epic night. He’s one of the first DJs I started listening to when I was younger and I’ve yet to be disappointed…

Avicii fills the Fillmore, Yos warms up the crowd. Need I say more?

Class may have started on the 4th at the University of Michigan, however Welcome Week part 2 kicked off with Avicii at the Fillmore in Detroit. Thousands crowded the sold out main floor and even spilled onto the balcony, each kid going crazy as all their favorites dropped. The new pop phenomenon has basically everyone screaming LEVELS! in anticipation of the track. Had myself a little jump for joy when Avicii dropped Deniz Koyu’s Dangerous remix which always stops me in my tracks.

Opening for Avicii, we had Yos on the decks, giving a deep house set that transitioned into a more progressive one. By the second half of his set, the entire crowd was jumping up and down getting warmed up to the tracklist he was dropping. I almost dropped my camera when he dropped Chemical Brothers’ Galvanize – what we would now call an oldie but goodie. Along with that he dropped his remix of Nadia Ali’s Pressure, her vocals carrying across the stage and into the waves of people.

There was certain debate between a few of us – we were trying to decide to whether Avicii’s performance at Bert’s Warehouse or Fillmore tickled our fancy more. It somewhat came to a draw but you can always compare setlists. Luckily for those looking we have a pretty complete setlist for Avicii, kept track of by our own writer Dan.

CLR brought the intensity and bass to Highline Ballroom in a special label event.

WOW. Talk about intense. My heart is still racing from this incredible evening. Well, I shouldn’t say evening since I didn’t leave until 7:15 in the morning! In the past year CLR Label nights have toured the globe with events in Barcelona (Sonar), Ibiza (Amnesia), Detroit (Movement), Amsterdam (ADE) and now New York and the UK. The CLR brand is known for perfect entertaining qualities, ecstatic live performances and raw sound. And that, my friends, is exactly what Friday night was: a harmonious fusion of intense techno, stimulating light shows, and pure energy. The Highline Ballroom hosted one unforgettable night of techno.

Liebing headlined the event alongside his good friend and Electric Deluxe label head Speedy J. CLR artist Black Asteroid debuted his live act on his home turf alongside fellow New York residents Alexi Delano and Taimur & Fahad.

Atlanta based renowned visuals artist OKTAform completed this top-notch line-up and had they been absent in my opinion, the night would have been mediocre at best. OKTAform created visual representations of every song that blasted through the speakers. Simply put, their contribution was not only a vital, but a necessary component of the evening. It gave image to my ears and hypnotized my mind.

Liebing was nothing short of spectacular. What endurance! This legend came on around 12:30 and was on stage until 7am. His set lasted til 5 but he lingered around, jumping in and playing with the other DJs of the night. With a constant underlying air of tension and uneasiness, this harmonious blend of techno and schranz-noise-industrial is not something you want to listen to when you are in need of calming. But since I was ready for a journey through the manic mind of a genius, I easily jumped on board.

Liebing is coming back to NY in February so if you were couldn’t make it to last weeks show you have a shot at redemption! Go to Pacha’s website for more info. To read more about him, read my prior article.

Troxler brought the pilgrimage underground to Good Units.

In the few times that I have been to Good Units, never have I seen it so packed. The entire main floor was crowded, with people overlooking from the balconies above. As I situated myself towards the middle, I suddenly realized I needed to watch out where I was dancing as to not bump into others. Never having to do that before at Good Units, I saw what a pilgrimage had gathered for Seth Troxler, the show of the holiday season.

Troxler’s personality on the decks was groovy, casual – not trying to impress anyone with their super DJ ego, just simply having a good time. Accompanying him was Shaun Reeves, with a crew hanging out on stage cruising to the beats. Behind them was a huge screen displaying a visual performance of video clips collaged together for a series of strange and other worldly vibes – from smoking buildings, to trippy visuals of a man turning into dust, to random eerie situations. Once again, Verboten was helping us go to the next dimension with the music. Move your body, explore your mind.

Recently I have been going to a lot of minimal and techno/tech-house shows that now when I go to another one, I have this audio illusion that I recognize every track. Or at least the beginnings of tracks. Certain basslines hit a chord or memory of an Itunes playlist, spotify track, or show. It has gotten bad enough to the point that I physically stop what I am doing and my mind struggles with IDing the track. I suppose it will take therapeutic show sessions to convince myself to let go of IDing tracks (so when’s the next show?). However, I was able to successfully ID one track – recognizing it from when I saw Loco Dice play in Detroit with crazy vocals leading into a loop from Duck Sauce’s Big Bad Wolf, which was followed by what some would call a life changing experience. (Butch – Rawhide )

Throughout Troxler’s set, he kept the basslines heavy and then brought uplifting vocal tracks to raise the crowd before bringing us back into the groove. Ideally, I’m waiting to get my hands on a tracklist to post because there were some vocal tracks I did not expect him to drop. It was sometimes to the point of mystic before dropping back into deep basslines. The more I listen to “house” music in its original classifications, the more it is easy to see how house music has its roots in jazz and disco. Take a look at this music info graphic illustrated and animated timeline by Thomson to show dance music has evolved (See it here.) I’m posting my video here, just to give a hint to the sounds Seth Troxler was dropping.

While I was there, I was hearing rumors Good Units was closing soon, and this was to be one of the last shows. I am saddened to hear this, as Good Units is one of those great underground spaces that bring in great names in electronic music along the ranks of LPR and a few others. Hopefully, the numbers that showed for Troxler can convince them otherwise.

Here are two more of the tracks he dropped that night:

Another DJ debut in NYC thanks to Electric Beach Series!

This Saturday, David Dann is making his long awaited NYC debut at none other than Santos Party House along with Dan Chetrit, who will be starting off the night.

Corona Light’s 13th week of the Electric Beach event series is making way for this ripe 22 year old DJ who, originally from New York, has already played in 15 different countries. Dann recently completed two tours: one through South America and another across college campuses nationwide. He has a spot on the AM only roster and has built his own record label. “Mind of a Genius” is what Dann entitled his masterpiece, and I’m sure after listening to him rip heaters on Saturday, you will better understand the name.

This name/slogan that he abides by definitely symbolizes how far he has come. The talented DJ and producer is also preparing for his album release, Wristbands and Alcohol in the upcoming fall! Take a ride around the world while listening to this preview of David’s debut album

Just like most, David started out by making house mixes for friends and family and soon they were pushing him for more. David finally acquiesced and posted his first podcast “Mind of a Genius”. 40,000 subscribers later and David found himself as the Director of Dance A&R for Thrive Music on the West Coast. He is definitely a force to be reckoned with, and one that is going to show the EDM scene something it has never seen before.

If you want to get a taste for Saturday, check out his two most recent releases:

Foster The People – Miss You (David Dann Remix)

Thursday (David Dann Remix) – The Weekend

This is just the beginning, so stay tuned as David Dann keeps rolling out the bangers at incredible speeds. AND don’t miss him this Saturday @ the legendary Santos Party House. Corona Light will be offering a few specials throughout the night, such as: $4 CL bottles, $45 for a bucket of 12, and $85 for a bucket of 24 bottles. You have to be 21 or older to enjoy this event. Doors open at 11pm and tickets are only 20 bills. Get ready for a night of dancing and debauchery.

Follow David Dann on Facebook and Twitter. You won’t be sorry.

Friday night, Blkmarket Membership along with Chris Liebing will be hosting the first ever CLR event in NYC which starts at 11pm… this is going to be outrageous.

Liebing is headlining the event at Highline Ballroom (431 W 16h Street). Following him will be Dutch producer Speedy J, Alexi Delano, Black Asteroid and Taimur & Fahad. Atlanta-based renowned visuals artist OKTAform will complete this stellar lineup.

This is definitely a can’t-miss event. Chris Liebing is a techno pioneer, DJ, producer, CLR podcast host, radio host and the driving force behind CLR. Combine his steady techno rhythms with the soul of house, and you can see how Liebing has fully embraced the digital age of music. Due to his relationship with various software and hardware makers, his current setup offers him practically endless possibilities; he has consistently used his talents and love for tech-house in a consequent and creative way. Liebing is a worldwide requested DJ and also part of the Collabs live act, together with Speedy J. In other words, he’s a really big deal, and Friday night is going to be epic.

CLR as created by Liebing stands for Create – Learn – Realize. It’s one of the most recognized techno brands in the industry. If you need your healthy fix or just want to learn/hear more about the CLR crew, be sure to check out Leibing on the CLR site

And definitely take a listen to this rather appropriately titled song American Madness to get you psyched for Friday night.

Get ready to blast off ! Tickets are still available here

What up playas… being fresh on the Silverlake Scene, allow me to introduce myself. I’m Desctruct-ekoff, but people refer to me as DP-Crack (once you read a few posts, I think you’ll see why).

I have recently decided to bring my talents down to Soho to join my homie BMJR. Given our similarly dope, ever-growing iTunes libraries, we have decided to mix up the game a little here. We are gonna be merging our magic for your audio pleasure. Like BMJR said, we will be bringing you new dope releases from a variety of genres, supplemented with some personal favorites acquired over the years that are unfamiliar to the average ear. Anyways, on to the dope show…

We’re gonna start off with a recent show we went to, Global Dub Festival (Royal Oak, Michigan). While Mimosa & Benga did it up, Zeds Dead was the clear crowd winner & deservedly so. Even if Dub is not your thing, scoping the few songs below will be worthwhile. Zeds Dead has a unique style, distinct from most Dubstep artists. Their set went every direction, featuring housey build-ups/break-downs at times, Bass-heavy grime, & the duo even impressively transitioned to 130 BPM Electro-House jams like “Shave It” – Zedd & “Mush Mush” – Bassjackers.

These 3 songs, all uniquely different, come from the recently released “Rumble in the Jungle” EP.

Zeds Dead – Coffee Break

Zeds Dead – Rumble In The Jungle (Original Mix)

Zeds Dead – Bassmentality

And now for a few classics:

Zeds Dead – White Satin

Blue Foundation – Eyes On Fire (Zeds Dead Remix)

Zeds Dead – 1975

And finally, we’re supplying you with a HQ rip of an unreleased remix. Closing out their set with it, this jam is sure to explode in the coming weeks. Check out the drop in our video below:

Sabi – Wild Heart (Zeds Dead Remix)

If we had to describe the show with one word, it would be “dope”. Very fun time. Now on to some more jams.

Electro House:

Posted Lazy Rich – Better Wipe That Up on the first post. 2 days go by and and we see this gem. After an exhausting amount of research, we’ve confirmed it is indeed a follow-up. Same great electro buildup but a funkier breakdown.

Lazy Rich – You Missed A Spot (Original Mix)

Speaking of funky…

Felguk – The Funky Drama (FTampa Remix)

Lazy Rich likes remixes too…

Felguk – Blow Out (Lazy Rich’s Impossible Remix)

Emerging from this same Electro style is one of our personal sleeper favorites. Hypster is on a MEGA right now and should dominate the Electro-House scene. We will be referencing PlasmaPool Records a ton, so familiarize yourself. Miles Dyson’s label is skyrocketing at the moment, and he continues to recruit up-and-comers in this scene to his label. Dyson is responsible for hooking up all our I-tune libraries with fat electro-synths from the likes of Mord Fustang, Chobot, Hypster, & Heren (see below). And when he’s not running the label, Miles likes to toy with some productions of his own…

This track made it’s way through festival season without really blowing up too hard. Epic drop from this Belgian&Greek duo.

and another look at electronic music.

When you find out Richie Hawtin is playing in his hometown across the Detroit River, there is only one thing you do: you go. The University of Windsor Student Association set up a Welcome Back electronic music festival for their students featuring acts from openers such as Manzone and Strong, Rivaz, and Heidi and headling acts with Benny Benassi and Richie Hawtin. This concert stage was set up right on Riverfront Festival Plaza with Detroit’s night skyline rising in the background. Thousands of festival goers joined knowing this is a night of talent not to be missed.

It was evident during Benassi’s set, the crowd was patiently awaiting Hawtin to come on. While he threw down a solid tracklist that had raised crowds off the floor just a day ago at Electric Zoo and North Coast Festival, it was Richie they were waiting to hear. They were not disappointed, as a smooth transition from Benassi’s dj setup to Hawtin’s already started to rile the festival goers up. Hands started to go up in the air and bodies began to lose their rigidness and started their flow.

I have watched quite a few DJs and producers behind in their booth now, and watching them work has also affected my opinion of them. It is something that being part of a crowd doesn’t always allow you to see or really pay attention to as you focus on the beat and movement. There have been many DJs who simply drop their tracks, fiddle here and there with a few settings, but for the most part keep their hands in the air, dancing and wowing the crowd. It often leads me to think to myself, “Why are your hands in the air and not on your craft?” Watching Hawtin move around his set up, he was constantly doing live edits and remixes to his own tracks. Improvisation, there in lies the skill, the true test of a DJ. There is a reason the legends are still relevant, and always will be. No matter what new technology shows up or the popular trend, their creative and technical talent is still pertinent.

Something I have discussed with Ferry Corsten, is that many younger DJs are one or two track ponies in essence and do not look further than producing their own track and setting up a crowd energizing setlist. Many electronic music listeners refuse to acknowledge that, but then again to each their own as Guti would say. I wish more listeners could see the talent that lies behind in the roots of electronic music, or be more aware of the “Sunday School Tent” as my friend AC says in reference to Electric Zoo’s tech house talent area.

I have to be honest, I wasn’t always a huge tech house, deep house, or minimal techno fan when I was a child. My more un-attuned ears preferred to hear vocals amidst trance playlists and lighter melodies (it may or may not have had to do with the fact that my parents complained every time the bass got too heavy and the house floors vibrated with just “thump thump”). But now as I grow older, I have found myself more and more appreciating the nuances and depth that it brings. The only way to describe the growth in appreciation is how one comes to appreciate classical music or curry a taste for fine wine. That in combination with watching DJs display their skill level live on stage now truly affects how I judge them. In a sense, I have become musically jaded almost to a point where I can be too harsh. But then, which critic isn’t?

Although I had heard Hawtin literally a day ago, closing for Electric Zoo on Sunday in the Sunday School tent, there was too much going on. Hilltop Arena tent music echoes wandered in and I had separated myself from a group to go see him. I knew in order for myself to truly focus and enjoy his set, it needed to be just Hawtin and no obligations calling me around a whole festival field. When I found out he was playing in Canada, forty-five minutes away from where I was, this was my call to action. This was the heart of it all, Hawtin playing in his hometown with the Detroit skyline a constant reminder of where it all began.

His set literally went beyond my expectations. Your body didn’t need to know how to move, the deep bass lines moved your body involuntarily. I love feeling the bass through my body as the ground reverberates with its message. It was creative expression that makes you feel a part of something bigger, a feeling that I would love to re-iterate in a warehouse with the same sounds. Hawtin kept playing literally until the plug was pulled from his speakers – a crowd left demanding one more song cut short from no power. Although staff and security were dancing and enjoying themselves to his tracks, it was time to go home.

I often reference a feeling from the movie “Groove” (2001) where after John Digweed’s set at 4:30am leaves one of the main characters Dave elated and lighter of heart to have been part of something bigger in music, in life. I had that feeling on Monday morning after Electric Zoo and I was happy I could repeat it once more as my friend and I drove down into the Canada tunnel back into Detroit grounds.

It’s not always you get to experience a set that is so eye opening and oozing with skill. That night, in reality, it had been a privilege to see the man work. Windsor knew it too and that energy came through on both sides. This article may have come in quite wordy and opinionated but there is no other option than experiencing it for yourself. So take a leap of faith, and delve for the best.

Bliss bangers & euphoria @ LAVO

Each visit to LAVO NY just keeps getting better and better. Calvin Harris stormed the house with some of LAVO’s most packed crowds. There are concerts every week, different djs playing at different bars and clubs, but Calvin’s performance brought back that feeling of raging at a festival – but in more civilized circumstances. He played his classics (at which point I always turn to my friend and go OH MY GOD!!! My brain is euphoric!) Everyone was rocking out – on top of ledges, on the couches, and dirty dancing on the dancefloor. I mean, it’s Calvin Harris.

The song I was looking forward to the most, was saved for the end. ”Feel So Close” dropped and my night was complete. And it followed “The Island pt.1″ by Pendulum. Done, my brain fried. He quickly exited not long after, but Calvin’s job here was done. He came & conquered. A secret rating system I have for DJs which is a little off the beaten track is how hard I danced and how gross I got in my evening finery. As a girl there is always that slight worry in the back of your head…will I leave looking somewhat presentable for the next possible club? But when song after song is just killing it and begging to be danced to, those worries are vanquished. So I left LAVO looking like a mess but it was well worth it for the bangers that Calvin put out.

On Friday Ellie Goulding will be gracing a sold out show in NYC with her fantastically British/falsetto presence. With hits like Lights that have been messed around by many a dj, such as Bassnectar, Britain’s newest sweet heart will have to prove her live vocal skills. But then again, if she’s good enough to sing at the Royal Wedding, she’ll be good enough for you, okay?
Goulding also just dropped her new album which everyone should listen to. Make Prince William proud.

Opening up for Ellie is the Australian duo, Bag Raiders. They’re a seriously groovy pair and absolutely ripped it up at Ultra this year. Shooting Stars may be their most well known song, but their self titled album is full of other winners as well.

van Doorn's name should be synonymous with quality sets and great nights.

This past Friday at Pacha, Sander van Doorn kicked off his North America tour with a bang! van Doorn dropped a crazy impressive set. I tend to not follow trance djs as closely, but his performance was still off the hook. He dropped his famous tracks such as “Love is Darkness” and of course epic “Koko.” His set had a definite mix of club favorites such as Avicii’s “Penguin” mixed in with more progressive tunes.

One note I have to make is that Nicky Romero’s remix of Flash by Green Velvet is now dropped by nearly every DJ at some point during their set – especially after van Doorn dropped it in his Ultra ASOT 500 set list (quite the epic set as well). It is a great track, but after hearing it so many times, it was refreshing to see that for Pacha’s performance he took it and did a remix of his own. It definitely gave the track new life and a little more meaning in the club.

Having been to Pacha a few times already since I have arrived in New York, van Doorn’s light show was by far the most spectacular. On multiple screens his name flashed and multi colored lights amped up the crowds to just keep dancing harder. Speaking of crowds, there was by far a full house that turned out for his show. Especially since Ultra, van Doorn’s name is becoming a known household name – surprising sets full of energy, van Doorn is definitely recreating the public’s image for Trance and Progressive.

Don’t be thrown off by his trance and progressive labeling however, if he’s coming to a city near you, I highly recommend you go see him. You’ll leave regretting you hadn’t gone to his earlier shows…

Kernkraft 400 is always a crowd mover…
and below is another track he dropped during his set, worth checking out.

The long awaited arrival of Sander van Doorn in New York City for his American tour - the EDM summer lineup continues

This Friday – come to Pacha NYC for one of Sander van Doorn‘s most anticipated sets. After hearing SVD’s set at Ultra this year, I cannot wait to see what he has in store for this weekend. So if you’re on the island, grab a cab and head over to W46th and 11th ave! (Buy tickets here)

Doorn has been dropping killer tracks, one after the other such as Love is Darkness, Bliksem, Hymn 2.0. Although he has been on the scene for a while with his own label, Doorn records, it hasn’t been until recently that his name is so widespread. Hailing from the Dutch lands, his sound is completely different than his Dutch counterparts. His tracks fall more into progressive trance and house and have an edge and dynamic to them unlike any other producer. A true lover of electronic music, van Doorn’s website says he personally chooses each track that he releases on his label. I have to say, his taste rings true because more and more of the tracks I love are marked by the Doorn Records label.

If you follow Sander van Doorn’s page on facebook (click here) you can download a free copy of his new remix of the Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man (which is a favorite of mine). You can also win tickets to shows at other locations he is on tour by tagging yourself in one of his posters.

Anytime is house time, house time is anytime – especially this Friday. Be sure to check out what the talk is all about.

Now who can miss a night like that?

LAVO NY is for sure not failing its EDM followers this summer – they just keep bringing in the best of the best!

This Thursday night is no exception as Max Vangeli comes to New York to heat up LAVO’s dance floors. Interviewed by MTV, Vangeli is now becoming a very well recognized EDM name especially after collaborating with Steve Angello and An21 on Pendulum‘s “The Island.” He is named DJ to look out for this year and is supposed to be coming out with an album this summer (People of the Night). Working with An21 (Steve Angello’s little brother) and the likes of Steve Angello, definitely infuses his music with the Swedish touch we so love to hear.

Having seen him play in Detroit at St. Andrew’s alongside An21, I am looking forward to watching Vangeli go solo at the decks on Thursday. I am predicting some epic drops and some very well known electronic bombs to fall – from “One” to “Island”, and perhaps some “Swedish Beauty”. From checking up on his twitter, there’s a very good chance his new remix of “Save the World” might bring the house down. It’s definitely a good night guaranteed

EC Twins #crushed LAVO and their new release, Say Yes! These guys are winners for sure.

First off, let me start by saying go on Beatport, type in “EC Twins“, familiarize yourself with this pure talent and then hit the “buy” button for their new release “Say Yes.” It’s your new summer anthem, it’s what you’re going to be playing in the car and — you’re going to be saying yes to love for quite a while.

While the west coast has been hoarding all their glory, the east coast hasn’t seen as much light. Until last night that is, when the EC Twins played a damn good set at LAVO. They dropped their new track “Say Yes“ and “Little White Doves”, both tracks that I’ve had on repeat on my computer. They played a well thought-out set, making a crowd (that usually comes to be seen) raise their hands and asking for more.

A pre-memorial day Thursday night brought many partygoers to the scene, allowing the EC Twins to drop their music bombs on an already willing crowd. After the dove hands had flown, classics by Benassi were dropped (definitely a welcome surprise) as well as recently popular tracks like Dirty South’s “Coming Home”. Their new remix of PPK’s “Resurrection” , an oldie but goodie, had quite an epic sound to it. It was quite the well rounded set that was full of dirty beat drops and when the bass kicked in, I jumped twice as hard. The energy and vibes are two things that I judge the harshest and are skills that not all performing producers have mastered. On all fronts the EC Twins did not disappoint. In fact, they brought twice the energy as they jumped and raged amidst changing tracks on their setlist. You can clearly tell the passion and appreciation they have for house music as it definitely shines through. I would love to see them perform at a different venue where the crowd’s mission is to get down and dirty with the bass and beats.

The twins left LAVO after #crushing only to keep working. They’re on their way to Vegas and will be playing tonight at the Marquee (once again west coast gets lucky). So now East coast, or beast coast, isn’t it time to show up the west coast, and check out this talent? Show some support, drop some love on their new track.
Help them climb the charts!!!! They’re #winning all around! Beatport link below:
