There’s been quite a bit of fuego that has scorched your eardrums this year, tune in on our top picks of 2011!

Welcome back to the top tracks of 2011, if you haven't read our criteria for our choices then you can read it below or refer to the previous posts: 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, 91-100. As for today's post and the following, I think this was the most difficult stretch back when I made the list last month. Tracks 41-60 could probably go in any order, this is just what I have gathered based on my experiences in 2011.

Silverlake to Soho is proud to present to you our top 100 tracks of 2011. Featuring a top 50 of 2011 is an already daunting task for an EDM blog to do, but a top 100, really? I bet you’re thinking that the quality slowly diminishes after 50, but as you will soon see, we probably could’ve gone up to 150. With the help of a few knowledgable ravers, legends, and friends of mine, I think I’ve conjured up a rather respectable list of tracks that represent 2011, thee MEGA in terms of releases. By top 100 “tracks”, I will more specifically be referring to mainly the EDM subgenre of progressive house. Why mainly progressive house? Based upon the endless quality releases of progressive this year, and for EDM all across the board, it would be virtually impossible to include other subgenres.

Other reasons why I want to stick to progressive are:
1) Although I appreciate Trance considerably, I have not followed trance extensively enough nor do I believe that I’d have a credible offering of opinions or selection.
2) It was also a great year for electro house, but I feel that there wouldn’t be enough to room to throw that into the mix (with exception to a few producers).
3) Although you know I love an occasional fucking tech bomb by Richard Dinsdale or Pleasurekraft, tech house just isn’t in popular demand at the moment!
4) Minimal/Techno – Sorry but I haven’t dug that deep yet…
5) Dubstep…no thanks, I don’t like having seizures on the dancefloor.

What were some other factors taken into consideration?
Popularity was obviously a huge factor. There are some tracks that undeniably reached the entire EDM spectrum and beyond. Call it commercial or radio friendly, there are those sing-along anthems that moved the masses to create one giant auditory synapse. Whether it be for good or for worse, anthems are what induce the EDM community to expand.
Festival Fuego. Some tracks were straight up festival staples this year and were the base ingredients that every big name needed to have in their sets. Regardless if we already heard that track 5 times that day (Camera’s ready, prepare to flash!), we would still give out the same reaction. Household names in the industry and their support for certain tracks also play a role since they are the trend setters of EDM. If the track has been circulating into a lot of big name sets, then chances are it’s probably a good track!
Diversity of sound (despite the list falling mainly under progressive) and range of artists. Sorry Avicii (and his fanboys), but we definitely wanted to showcase a bit of everything, ranging from feel-good, bigroom, trouse, clubby progressive, melodic/airy smooth, tropical fuego, and emotionally driving tracks. A track doesn’t have to be an in-your-face, synth-happy, bass-heavy banger to be a top 100 track.
Crushability. This is self-explanatory.

Is this bias? Abso-fucking-lutely. A lot of these tracks represent my personal taste and are from some of my favorite producers. I’ve invested a lot of time in posting features like Fuego Fridays, so I believe my input is well-deserved.

So take these with a grain of salt, as music (especially EDM) is very opinionated. This is intended to create a forum of discussion about this past year’s releases! So if you have anything on your mind, please comment below.

#60 Afrojack - Doing It Right (Original Mix) / Afrojack & R3hab - Prutataaa (Original Mix)

I couldn't decide which Afrojack track deserved to be on here, each track has its upside. Hell, this is only #60 and we're not even wet yet, so a tie isn't a big deal. Production-wise, I feel that Afrojack had a great year but he was wasn't a stand out like Fedde Le Grand or Alesso. He put forth good original mixes but nothing within the caliber of his 2010 productions “Replica”, “Pacha On Acid”, and “Take Over Control". However, the 24 year-old Dutch phenom does know to entertain. Afrojack’s 2011 DJing campaign consisted of many unforgettable festival sets. With regards to three of the biggest EDM festivals in the US -- namely EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Miami, and Electric Zoo -- I have not heard a single complaint about his sets. I had the chance to see him in a club setting at the Mid in Chicago and at Electric Zoo so I definitely noticed a different type of intensity that he brought in a festival setting. Next to Tiesto, he had one of the best sets with memorable moments being Quintino's upcoming bomb "The One And Only" and a mash-up of Calling vs. Louder Than Words.

Some like to describe Afrojack's bizarre sound as somebody choking to death or exaggerated cliffhangers, but I like to call it duck music. About 2 minutes into "Doing It Right", we have a prime example of Afrojack showcasing his pet duck that just quacks and quacks, slowly entrenching itself in your memory . There's one thing you'll never be when you listen to this track -- bored. Some may argue that this track is way too busy and kind of annoying at times. However, I actually like how busy and annoying the track is, you can look at it as an excellent job of layering. "Doing It Right" also reminds me how different and unique Afrojack's sound is relative to his Dutch contemporaries in electro and progressive house.

Afrojack - Doing It Right (Original Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

Although I'm a bigger fan of Afrojack's "Doing It Right", this track was more widely played as it received support from Michael Woods, Laidback Luke, Sander Van Doorn, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. With the help of Dutch breakout producer R3hab (who crushed 2011), the two engineered an eccentric and unforgettable Dutch crushable. Even Moby, who was actually the cold-blooded show stopper at Electric Zoo, made people move with "Prutataaa" during his well-rounded set. WOO!

Afrojack & R3hab - Prutataaa (Original Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

#59 Nicky Romero - Toulouse (Original Mix)

Did I give this track enough time to play out to receive such a high ranking? Probably not, but that's not necessary considering all you have to do his listen to the completely absurd drop in this track. There's no other way to describe the drop other than a blistering surge of Nicky Romero madness. It's currently sitting strong in the Beatport Top 10 at #3 and surprisingly enough, has an orderly electro structure to it.

#58 Arty & Mat Zo - Mozart (Original Mix)

Following up their success from #1 Beatport smash”Rebound”, Anjunabeat’s finest Mat Zo and Arty ignite straight fuego in their latest collaboration called “Mozart”. It was released as a part of Anjunabeats, Vol. 9 (Bonus Track Version) via iTunes and was released as a single again through Anjunabeats December 11th. Showcasing a blissful assortment EDM’s most captivating elements, “Mozart” will surely induce any listener in a graceful groove.

Here's some wonderful words on the Anjunabeats Soundcloud page:

“A more house-slanted affair than the riotous, turbo-charged “Rebound”, “Mozart” builds and builds through waves of old school piano rolls and new school synth surges before arriving at a climatic breakdown. Sizzling with energy and peak-time atmosphere, “Mozart” then turns on a clarion call of bright funk-fuelled synths that snap into a body-popping groove before an explosive drop. With both Mat Zo and Arty counting DJs like the Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto and Above & Beyond as fans, “Mozart” looks set to blur the boundaries once again.”

#57 Whiskey Pete & Sporty-O - Heard Of Us (PeaceTreaty Remix)

Based out of Chino Hills, California, the electro house duo PeaceTreaty boasts some of the hottest underrated remixes of the year such as their remixes to Diplo & Oliver Twizt's "GO", Sidney Samson & Steve Aoki's "Wake Up", Moby's "After", and this fuego hot "Heard Of Us" remix. Even Afrojack dropped this bomb during his EDC Las Vegas set where he mashed it with Lil Wayne's "A Milli". There's a reason why I have this track ranked so high as you will soon see.

As much as I loved Hardwell in 2011 year (he's a top 5 producer in terms of consistency and quality) he kind of jacked PeaceTreaty's "Heard Of Us" drop and used it in his purported "original" track "Cobra". Compare the drops yourself, 2:14 in Peacetreaty's remix and 2 min into "Cobra". It's ironic that Hardwell would do such a thing, considering he was the one who showed me Peacetreaty's remix when he dropped it on his Hardwell On Air radioshow and when he dropped it during his set at Electric Zoo (mashed with "Walking On A Dream", the MAKJ mash-up). However, it seems that Hardwell still pays respect to Peacetreaty's track since he dropped it again when I saw him in Ann Arbor (again as MAJK's mashup) even after he dropped "Cobra" in his set. Again, don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be a hater, Hardwell obviously bounced back with "Munster". I was actually quite curious to see what PeaceTreaty thought about this subject, so I asked them via Facebook. Here's their very respectable response:

"We can't do much about it since it already happened. If anything, it's great to see that we are inspiring these producers that we look up to do something like that. In the end we just gotta make something better and keep do our thing. No time to cry about things like that ".

Whiskey Pete & Sporty-O - Heard Of Us (PeaceTreaty Remix) (Purchase on Beatport)

**Magma-hot mash up: Peacetreaty vs. Empire Of The Sun - Heard Us Walking On A Dream (MAKJ Bootleg)

#56 Swedish House Mafia & Knife Party - Antidote (Original Mix)

At first, the track didn’t rub me the right way. Since they went softer with their massive commercial tune "Save The World", I was expecting those galvanizing arena synths and pungent drops we heard in “One” and “Miami 2 Ibiza”. But after giving it a few listens and thinking about how huge it was during SHM's lesson at Club MSG, the track had engrained itself in my ear drum. “Antidote” also shows how much Swedish House Mafia really appreciates the transcending spectrum of EDM. Inspired by the breakthrough subgenre of dubstep, they incorporate wobbling elements into their stuttering drop while maintaining their presence with an urgent chord progression.

Swedish House Mafia vs. Knife Party - Antidote (Original Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

#55 Eric Prydz - 2Night (Original Mix)

Let the electro eargasms begin because this track sounds amazing anywhere your at. Like most of Prydz/Pryda's music, it's difficult for me to describe, you just need to experience it. As for his latest original production "2Night", it's those celestial melodies of this deep progressive tune that will induce a subconscious intergalactic groove! Also, It looks as if Prydz has heard us Americans bitch about his absence during the great EDM explosion of 2011.

Eric Prydz - 2Night (Original Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

Bonus: Oasis vs. Eric Prydz - Wonderwall 2Night (Ken Loi Bootup)

#54 Matisse & Sadko - Hi Scandinavia! (Original Mix)

This is another win for ZOUK Recordings, the progressive/trance branch of Armada, and for team Russia! I literally had no idea who these brothers were back when this barreling bigroom bomb was released in early January. Nor do I think those that attended Steve Angello's legendary NYE set at Roseland Ballroom knew who these guys were either. Although not often, this track was used as festival ammo by Third Party at Tommorowland and Thomas Gold at EDC Las Vegas. You can really feel the raw energy in the form of charging builds and slashing stadium-esque synths. We should also take note of the solid vocal mix "We're Not Alone (Hi Scandinavia!)" featuring singer Ollie James that dropped in September.

Matisse & Sadko - Hi Scandinavia! (Original Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

Mash-up madness: Matisse & Sadko vs. Mylo - Hi Scandinavia! vs. Drop The Pressure (Acappella)

#53 Dune - Heiress Of Valentina (Alesso Exclusive Mix)

Never has an emo singer sounded so damn good in a progressive house track and never would I imagine Alesso to be this good after I downloaded his "Loose It (Anthem Mix)" in the late summer of 2010! I first heard this track in mid March when Tiesto dropped at Dream Nightclub in Cleveland, where he was showcasing the best compilation of 2011 Club Life Vol. One: Las Vegas. Even though Nillionaire was huge in Alesso's 2011 ascension, I think this track showed how incredible Alesso was even before his "Pressure" remix was released. From its tranquil beginning and heart-rending vocals to its feel-good drop, this is Alesso at his best. And if you didn't know what the song is about, it's about a transvestite trying to find his identity in society. The music video by the Danish band Dúné is posted below.

Dune - Heiress Of Valentina (Alesso Exclusive Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

#52 Fedde Le Grand - Metrum (Original Club Mix)

I've been waiting a long time to say this: FUCKING TECH BOMB! Blurring the boundaries between tech house, progressive, and techno, Fedde Le Grand's signature pounding club beat and moody breakdown in "Metrum" will impose itself on anyone with a working set of ears to cause dancefloor demolition. If we go by sales success for releases, then Fedde Le Grand is the Beatport KING with every track he released this year earning a top spot. If emphasis was placed on EDM as a whole rather than just progressive, this track might be a top 10 or 20 track.

Fedde Le Grand - Metrum (Original Club Mix) (Purchase on Beatport)

#51 Danny Freakazoid & Matt Caseli - Raise Your Hands (Original Mix)

As the longest serving resident DJ at Pacha Ibiza with 15 years under his belt, Swiss native Matt Caseli understands how to get people to move. Not only has he gained residency at Pacha Moscow, but he and 24 year-old Swiss DJ/producer Danny Freakazoid have the respect from Swedish House Mafia mastermind Axwell. As a follow up to their 2010 Axtone-released track "Sign Your Name" , "Raise Your Hands" is a dark dancefloor destroyer that has been championed by every big name in every big festival. From the get-go we have a crisp and driving bass that avidly establishes a fluid club rhythm, of which culminates in one of the most menacing drops I've heard all year.

"Raise Your Hands" is still going strong, here is Alesso sporting that sinister drop at Pacha NYC the other week. Here's what it's all about!

Another DJ debut in NYC thanks to Electric Beach Series!

This Saturday, David Dann is making his long awaited NYC debut at none other than Santos Party House along with Dan Chetrit, who will be starting off the night.

Corona Light's 13th week of the Electric Beach event series is making way for this ripe 22 year old DJ who, originally from New York, has already played in 15 different countries. Dann recently completed two tours: one through South America and another across college campuses nationwide. He has a spot on the AM only roster and has built his own record label. "Mind of a Genius" is what Dann entitled his masterpiece, and I'm sure after listening to him rip heaters on Saturday, you will better understand the name.

This name/slogan that he abides by definitely symbolizes how far he has come. The talented DJ and producer is also preparing for his album release, Wristbands and Alcohol in the upcoming fall! Take a ride around the world while listening to this preview of David’s debut album

Just like most, David started out by making house mixes for friends and family and soon they were pushing him for more. David finally acquiesced and posted his first podcast “Mind of a Genius”. 40,000 subscribers later and David found himself as the Director of Dance A&R for Thrive Music on the West Coast. He is definitely a force to be reckoned with, and one that is going to show the EDM scene something it has never seen before.

If you want to get a taste for Saturday, check out his two most recent releases:

Foster The People - Miss You (David Dann Remix)

Thursday (David Dann Remix) - The Weekend

This is just the beginning, so stay tuned as David Dann keeps rolling out the bangers at incredible speeds. AND don't miss him this Saturday @ the legendary Santos Party House. Corona Light will be offering a few specials throughout the night, such as: $4 CL bottles, $45 for a bucket of 12, and $85 for a bucket of 24 bottles. You have to be 21 or older to enjoy this event. Doors open at 11pm and tickets are only 20 bills. Get ready for a night of dancing and debauchery.

Follow David Dann on Facebook and Twitter. You won't be sorry.

Friday night, Blkmarket Membership along with Chris Liebing will be hosting the first ever CLR event in NYC which starts at 11pm... this is going to be outrageous.

Liebing is headlining the event at Highline Ballroom (431 W 16h Street). Following him will be Dutch producer Speedy J, Alexi Delano, Black Asteroid and Taimur & Fahad. Atlanta-based renowned visuals artist OKTAform will complete this stellar lineup.

This is definitely a can't-miss event. Chris Liebing is a techno pioneer, DJ, producer, CLR podcast host, radio host and the driving force behind CLR. Combine his steady techno rhythms with the soul of house, and you can see how Liebing has fully embraced the digital age of music. Due to his relationship with various software and hardware makers, his current setup offers him practically endless possibilities; he has consistently used his talents and love for tech-house in a consequent and creative way. Liebing is a worldwide requested DJ and also part of the Collabs live act, together with Speedy J. In other words, he's a really big deal, and Friday night is going to be epic.

CLR as created by Liebing stands for Create – Learn – Realize. It's one of the most recognized techno brands in the industry. If you need your healthy fix or just want to learn/hear more about the CLR crew, be sure to check out Leibing on the CLR site

And definitely take a listen to this rather appropriately titled song American Madness to get you psyched for Friday night.

Get ready to blast off ! Tickets are still available here

A while back we told you that the Spring Break game had changed. We told you how College Travel Experts in conjunction with Prime Social Group had created something magical called Electro Beach PV.

But what if we told you that it just got better?
Now think about everything we said before and then add Tiesto. But there is only one way to find out. <a href="http://electrobeachpv.com/ " title="Book the experience now.
you're waiting for something else, right?

Well don't because that's the name of the group that I'd like to share with you. Some are calling it post-chillwave, but I'd like to call it headphone candy. The sound is definitely electronic but in a more relaxed and gradual sense. I'd call it "chill electronic pop." Packed with an abundance of sound, instruments and low-end swells, this is definitely the type of music that will keep you coming back for more

The album titled "Imbue Up" is sensational. It mingles with your senses and lingers in your ears. Click HERE to listen to the whole album for free. Now this isn't music that is going to make you run 6 miles or do your personal rave dance that you've been saving for Lavo, but it's definitely a must have in your music stash when the time is right.

What up playas... being fresh on the Silverlake Scene, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Desctruct-ekoff, but people refer to me as DP-Crack (once you read a few posts, I think you'll see why).

I have recently decided to bring my talents down to Soho to join my homie BMJR. Given our similarly dope, ever-growing iTunes libraries, we have decided to mix up the game a little here. We are gonna be merging our magic for your audio pleasure. Like BMJR said, we will be bringing you new dope releases from a variety of genres, supplemented with some personal favorites acquired over the years that are unfamiliar to the average ear. Anyways, on to the dope show...

We're gonna start off with a recent show we went to, Global Dub Festival (Royal Oak, Michigan). While Mimosa & Benga did it up, Zeds Dead was the clear crowd winner & deservedly so. Even if Dub is not your thing, scoping the few songs below will be worthwhile. Zeds Dead has a unique style, distinct from most Dubstep artists. Their set went every direction, featuring housey build-ups/break-downs at times, Bass-heavy grime, & the duo even impressively transitioned to 130 BPM Electro-House jams like "Shave It" - Zedd & "Mush Mush" - Bassjackers.

These 3 songs, all uniquely different, come from the recently released "Rumble in the Jungle" EP.

Zeds Dead - Coffee Break

Zeds Dead - Rumble In The Jungle (Original Mix)

Zeds Dead - Bassmentality

And now for a few classics:

Zeds Dead - White Satin

Blue Foundation - Eyes On Fire (Zeds Dead Remix)

Zeds Dead - 1975

And finally, we're supplying you with a HQ rip of an unreleased remix. Closing out their set with it, this jam is sure to explode in the coming weeks. Check out the drop in our video below:

If we had to describe the show with one word, it would be "dope". Very fun time. Now on to some more jams.

Electro House:

Posted Lazy Rich - Better Wipe That Up on the first post. 2 days go by and and we see this gem. After an exhausting amount of research, we've confirmed it is indeed a follow-up. Same great electro buildup but a funkier breakdown.

Lazy Rich - You Missed A Spot (Original Mix)

Speaking of funky...

Lazy Rich likes remixes too...

Emerging from this same Electro style is one of our personal sleeper favorites. Hypster is on a MEGA right now and should dominate the Electro-House scene. We will be referencing PlasmaPool Records a ton, so familiarize yourself. Miles Dyson's label is skyrocketing at the moment, and he continues to recruit up-and-comers in this scene to his label. Dyson is responsible for hooking up all our I-tune libraries with fat electro-synths from the likes of Mord Fustang, Chobot, Hypster, & Heren (see below). And when he's not running the label, Miles likes to toy with some productions of his own...

If you haven't heard of this recent addition to Skrillex's OWSLA label, get on it. KOAN Sound (pronounced Koh-Anne) is a Bristol, England-based dubstep group with a lotta funk. Sort of a mix between Skrillex & Bassnectar's sound circa Mesmerizing The Ultra

Sonny Moore, minus the Moore, minus the Sonny, add Skrillex. That's how the past ten(ish) years have gone for the musical genius behind the "Prince of Dubstep", as affectionately called by his fans. There is no denying that Skrillex has made his presence known in the EDM world, creating a very original sound breaking what some refer to playfully as "cookie cutter dubstep".

He puts it best himself, describing his music as "a mix of dubstep, electro, and glitch all thrown in together", a potpourri of genres and sounds, reason to give YouTube commenters reason to say "Skrillex should be it's own genre". Skrilex's latest musical venture is OWSLA, the once shrouded-in-mystery label that Moore plans to open up, according to CBS News. Owsla the name of an organization of rabbits from Moore's favorite book, Watership Down, by British author Richard Adams.

Zero score and seven years ago, an 18 year old Sonny Moore appeared in the budding emo music scene, black hair, black shirt, black pants (what's changed?), and taking role as captain of the ever popular From First to Last (FFTL). With them, Sonny was the frontman/lead vocalist for 4 years, the first album released with Moore was entitled "Dear Diary, My Teenage Angst Has A Body Count", which was the album that coincidentally got me (hi I'm Will) into music. After 3 more years of FFTL, Sonny Moore decided to professionally drop his last name, and embark on a solo project as Sonny. Through the medium of Sonny, he began his rise to electronic music fame. The album featured Moore using turntables and synthesizers, along with guitar and his own vocals. In fact, side note, the vocals you hear in songs like "Father Said" and "Rock N Roll Will Take You To The Mountain" are sung by Moore himself. Anyways, the techno elements on the Gypsyhook EP by Sonny and it's two lead singles, Gypsyhook and Mora are immediately noticable. The EP, released in 2009, was the gateway between Sonny Moore and Skrillex, because exactly one month and one year later, the debut smasher, My Name is Skrillex, was released for free on the internet. Music has been a big part of Sonny's life, he has successfully conquered 2 genres predominant in the American youth, and he isn't even 25 yet. The musical feats of Sonny/Skrillex are unmatched by anyone else in either of the genres, he is indeed someone of prominence in the music world, as well as in my own life. "Dear Diary..." was one of the first albums I ever bought with my own money, and I listened to the damn thing 7 times in a row Saturday night. I stayed up past my bedtime so I could play it more on my new bright blue Sony CD player. He became the first artist I followed closely, and when he released the Gypsyhook EP, it took me a while to like it, but I got there. I slowly got into EDM after that album, and I have no one to blame but Sonny. After I had lost track of Sonny, I heard of a dubstep sensation named Skrillex. After listening to him, mind blown, one week later, I discovered he was Sonny. When that connection was made, it really tied it all together. I realized that he was one of the most musically diverse and talented people I knew. I am proud to call Sonny Moore my musical inspiration. For my motivation to produce, to write, and to understand music, I thank you Sonny.

Get educated on Skrillex:

Even Diplo's on it testing his new tracks!

With music, we're genetically encoded to share. Whether it's to prove that you have better taste or simply to share an emotion, we all have that innate feeling to reach out and listen. The gift of a track title can be more powerful than any other physical gift received. Once we have that gift we listen to it over and over, run it through the mill and then we're left on a constant search for something good and new, which is why we share. The onset of podcasts from major DJs has simplified the process for us greatly - find your favorite dj and then essentially listening to his podcast is what he recommends. You're done, set. There is the outbound process but no conversation. The new online web app TurnTable.fm has come to fill that gap.
Turn table provides rooms with "dj sets" for as many as 5 different djs. You can create rooms with your own genre of music or join one that already has been made. Join the queue and step up to the podium with your list of pre-selected songs from either online or your computer. People vote on your tracks as good or bad which is how you increase your point score. Higher point scores enables cooler avatar (the coolest one is the Daft Punk avatars but so far only the creators of turntable.fm have that access). You take turns with one song at a time or however the rules are set up in the room you're in, so everybody has a chance to add in to this mix. Feel like you're not on the level to add to the musical playlist? No worries, just join a room to relax and vote on other people's choices. You can see which rooms your friends are in and whoever you become a "fan" of .
Perhaps the part I was most skeptical of was the chat box. At first I saw it as a side option not really necessary, however as I became more involved and found a room I enjoyed to DJ in, I realized how crucial it really was. Here is where the magic happened. The little chat box was an open forum for discussion of new tracks, artists, polls, opinions. From personal experience in the room "Trance Out" I join about a dozen or two "usuals" who always come together in this room to show off their tracks. The moderators keep close watch to keep the quality of the tracks on par and in tune with the genre. The room draws an average of 80-90 people and sometimes partake in the ongoing conversation. Us "pros" like to show off to each other good remixes and how we feel out the crowd and the general trend (upbeat, vocal, slower, etc). Newbies are also welcome as long as they can keep up! Regardless of chatting it up which has led to a creating a community of music lovers, the mere exchange of tracks is quite impressive. The conversation is always kept fresh with a unity for the music we like and our given nature to share.

If you hear a song you like, it's easy to find out what it is and keep track. While the track is playing you can add it to your own queue, find it on iTunes, Amazon, last.fm, rdio, or if you have one, spotify. Missed that chance? Right above the room is a tab that says "room information" where there is a list of the most recently played songs and how popular they were in the room. As you become an avid user of TT, be sure to check out the extension for Google Chrome that allows you to see who liked or lamed your song as well as other perks. I can say that turntable.fm is addictive - the whole gamification process draws you in and you're always in for new music. The chat moves so quick that you have to pay close attention in order to keep up with the conversation. It's fun to see the same people return to your room and just play a few good tunes.

Special shout out to Morgon & the crew in the Trance Out! room. Keep it real!

indabamusic.com is holding a voting competition where the winner earns an opportunity to play at Identity Festival.

The problem is, two friends of Silerlaketosoho are competing against one another. So, you as the listeners are going to have to make that decision - as long as your voting for one of them ofcourse. (you can vote more than once, so why not for both!?)

Rob Cho, AKA Chobot, currently has 3 songs (Don't Worry, Video Game Slang, Passion Fruit) in the top 15. All of them are brilliant forays into electro warzones with an always present glimmer of delicate beauty. Have a listen for yourself and make your vote.

&

Silverlaketosoho regular, Barnett Lobell, now dubbed as Acetronik, has entered a most unique brand of dubstep entitled "Monkey Do This". It's truly beautiful, easy listening, reggae-jungle-dub.

"What I tried to do with this track was create a unique brand of dubstep. The result was something so oddly beastly, it would make King Kong himself smile. And rave. HARD." - Barnett Lobell

So without further adieu, go out and vote!

I've been reading a lot about Nitty Scott MC lately so I went out last Friday at Southpaw to see her in action. Without getting too crazy with the rhetoric, she blew my mind. I go to a decent amount of hip hop shows per year and am continually astounded by the poor live mixing and random people yelling over the lyricist's good lines. Nitty demonstrated what it means to truly be an MC: move the crowd. Performing tracks from the astounding Cassette Chronicles as well as the upcoming Boombox Diaries, I was absolutely floored by her poise and presence as a performer. Although she is only 5'2", she delivered monstrous a capella freestyles that left me absolutely awestruck. After seeing her in action, I'm confident Nitty will leave her own artist's mark on hip hop for years to come.

here's a cut from Cassette Chronicles that I particularly enjoy (love those soul loops)

JELLYFISH LAKE, PALAU from Sarosh Jacob on Vimeo.

So, I realize this is technically a "music" blog but this is too badass to pass up. I came across this on Digg - a video by a photographer/traveler in the Jellyfish Lake in Palau, here's the photographer's summary:

"Jellyfish Lake is located on Eli Malk island in the Republic of Palau. Twelve thousand years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded. With no predators amongst them for thousands of years, they evolved into a new species that lost most of their stinging ability as they no longer had to protect themselves. They are pretty much harmless to humans although some people with very sensitive skin may get a minor sting from them. If you are allergic to jellyfish you should wear a wetsuit or protective clothing.

These fascinating creatures survive by sharing a symbiotic relationship with algae that live inside of them. At night, the jellyfish go down to the depths of the lake where the algae feed on nutrients. During the day, the jellyfish come back to the surface and follow the sun across the lake in a massive migration. The algae convert the energy of the sun via photosynthesis into a sugar that feeds the jellyfish.

It is not possible to scuba dive in this lake because the nutrient rich layer at around 50 feet and below contains hydrogen sulphide which is highly toxic to humans. If a scuba diver was to swim in that layer, the toxins would enter the body through the skin and that exposure could be fatal. Snorkeling however, is perfectly safe and if you ever find yourself in Palau one day, you should make your way to this special place. The experience of swimming through millions of jellyfish is quite surreal and Palau is the only place in the world where you can do just that!"

Go highbrow! Japan's leading electronic composer Ryoji Ikeda brings us the transfinite, an immersive large-scale digital installation, at Park Avenue Armory. The visual and sonic landscape takes up much of Wade Thompson Drill Hall (a 55,000 square foot space), inviting viewers to completely immerse themselves in the experience. There are two parts, and the sheer size of it is arresting. There's a space to the right to remove your shoes when you enter the hall, but most people including myself simply walked straight to the edge with mouths agape, kicked them off without looking away from the 45 foot tall, 60 foot wide screen and wandered to an open spot to sit down. The synchronized music and visuals are... well check out my "Blown Away" face.

Photo: Debbie Zwi

"A meditation on the concept of infinity, the transfinite takes its name from the mathematical notion of transfinite numbers, which are larger than any finite numbers, yet quantitative and ordered. The exhibition comprises two large-scale works, which transform a continuous stream of scientific data into digital sound and abstracted images to create two very different sensory experiences. Through Ikeda's orchestration of shifting binary code, binary color, data visualization, and digital sound, these contrasting works create a powerful audio-visual experience intended to ignite a physical response in the viewer"

The second half of the installation is in stark contrast to the first. Ryoji Ikeda invites us to contemplate constantly scrolling scientific data on the massive screen in a much more subdued environment. The floor is no longer part of the projection, but there are nine screens mounted like tables down the middle for a more intimate experience.

the transfinite is on view at Park Avenue Armory from May 20th to June 11th. General admission tickets are $12, Seniors/Students/Groups of 8 or more are $10. Go get your culture on.
