Talent like this is why I love what I do and makes it all worthwhile. Completely unsuspecting, South Carolina born Noah is only 18 yet his voice is mature. One of the most powerful I’ve heard in a long time it has a raspy blues feel to it with a slight country twang. He COMPLETELY reworks LMFAO’s “Sexy And I Know It” and takes it from an unbearable Vegas headache inducing track (sorry LMFAO) to something I’ve had on repeat yet still can’t get enough of. This guy is going to be huge…mark my words. Really looking forward to what else he will do…in the meantime the video is on the right. Circoloco: Magic by Verboten

“These are the moments we live for.” I turned around and said that to John Perez, who runs Verboten, as Davide unexpectedly steps up to the turntables and plays one last beautiful song. Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann had just finished their after hours set together at the Morgan but people were still lingering on below chanting for one more. As the last track goes on, the beat and rhythm was powerful enough for everyone to reach into their last pockets of energy and simply go wild like it was their last morning to live. In the movie “Groove” (2000), which I often reference, one of the characters asks Ernie why he goes through so much effort to throw these parties. He responds, “The nod.”

“Happens to me at least once every party. Some guy comes up to me and says “Thank you for making this happen… I needed this. This really meant something to me.” And they nod… and I nod back.” – Ernie, Groove (2000)

It’s not every party I feel I can say that, and there are parties that come and go. Circoloco, however, will stay with me amongst my memorable nights. I added a simple thank you of my own for an incredible 14 hours.

6:30pm I arrive at Beekman Beer Garden. So it wasn’t 80 degrees when the party started, however the couches in the sand and the sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge and everyone in their summery clothing reminded me of WMC. I miss Miami nearly everyday but the open air tent and the East River brought a nostalgia mixed with familiarity. I was amidst good people, good music, and good weather. After all, majority of the people there were probably down in Miami as well. Ravi Deejay and Stadenco brought familiar grooves into my ears as I waited for the place to fill up.

By the time Davide and Matthias had walked on stage, the sun had already set beyond the Hudson River, and the pinkish tinge had already left the skies. There is something about the night that changes the ambiance and the crowd was restless. By now, the entire Beekman was filled with circus revelers. The tent was was packed and alive with movement and the sands behind housed the party goers that spilled out from the tent. And then the speakers spoke the truth that the CDJs told them.

Clever drops and great samples and the power of two minds and two pairs of hands is what makes Davide and Tanzmann quite the team. Their skill and experience shows through as my friends and I would often look at each other in disbelief in the tracks they lay down. ”Now this is good!” Earlier in the night I was chastised for conserving my energy and keeping my moves conservative. With these two behind the decks, there was no holding back. Neither did the crowd.

Having spent some time in the Chicago underground this past year, I had yet to see DJ Sneak. You cannot mention Chicago House without having his name come up. He is an integral part of the rise and evolution of what us sticklers would call “Chicago House” to differentiate from the trend of commercial progressive people loosely and carelessly call house music. Recently he has been on EDM news with his “attacks” on Swedish House Mafia. Stand down, SHM, because his CD binder alone could knock all three of you out at once. Each CD marked and graffitied, the binder was a treasure cove of sound in itself. As impressive as his binder was his actual DJ skills. Wow. I would like to find another man who has the guts to lay down some real SOUL music in their set – with timing so impeccable, few could pull off the a cappellas he dropped. DJ Sneak dropped hidden gems that only the eighties could reminisce of.

In a general comment on a lot of music that has been coming out in our field, a lot of producers remember the energy but forget the soul. Energy burns out, but soul feeds the body for so much longer. What keeps us on the dance floor, is the ability to lose ourselves into the nuances that sound brings. A simple testament to this truth is how certain sets/parties go on for three hours while you have others that go on for ten. In this case, fourteen. I’m not here for the sprint, I’m dedicated to the marathon.

As Andrew Grant finished off the first half of the night with a heightened energy, all of us househeads knew that 2:30am is simply when the night truly begins. There is literally nothing extremely exciting about the decor of the Morgan. In reality it is somewhat of a dungeon-like brick space. The more underground and uninteresting the space, it seems that the music sounds truer, amplified by the gathering of people for the same purpose. We are all connected by the vibrations of the bass.

DJ Sneak along with Davide and Matthias played another round of sets at the Morgan. Perhaps because of what I explained above, these sets hit me with a harder ambition to dance. The cover of darkness can do many wonders to set a mood. The rooms, packed to the brim feeding off of the DJs energy and vice versa is something amazing even to witness. Why else would Davide step up for that one last track? It’s the love for the music.

And that my friends, is the moment I live for.

After eleasing “G Sharp” a little while back King Fantastic drop their brand new EP, “SocioPoliticalPimpTalk.” As with “G Sharp: the rest of the EP has a similar sound, simple beats with the rhymes carrying the tune. On their track “Jamaica, California” they demonstrate an eerie sound similar to something OFWGKTA would do and then drop a section clearly an homage to the Ying Yang Twins “The Whisper Song” whilst “Coastal Shindig” is definitely the most catchy song on the EP. Verboten is Bringing Summer Back to NYC

So while everyone runs away to the Hamptons, Verboten has given us house heads a definite reason to stay in the city this summer. With the line up of artists who are coming to town, it’s time to brave that concrete heat and settle in for a musically fantastic summer.

Gloomy week with cloudy skies got you down? Verboten’s bringing the heat this weekend that we’ve been craving. Circo Loco is in town and revelers must attend! Acrobatic spins on the decks are a must see by the following talented circus performers: DJ Sneak, Davide Squillace, Matthias Tanzmann, Andrew Grant, Dan Ghenacia, Anthony Collins, and last but by no means least, Stadenco.

Dive into this circus at the Beekman Beer Garden, a new location for Verboten with great views of Brooklyn Bridge and yonder. Party starts at 6pm but don’t burn out – this is another late night affair.

DJ Sneak, well recognized and well respected on the house scene since its early days in Chicago, has recently been mentioned and sat down with in this wonderfully house history educating article. Those who know, know – the rest learn how house music truly came about. Read it here.

Davide Squillace, known to be good friends with Guti, hails from Italy. You can often find him b2bing with Matthias Tanzmann. Either way here is one of his stellar sets from WOMB, Tokyo (a place I vow to visit because the sets the come from out of there are always downright phenomenal).

Take a quick nap and move yourself across the Brooklyn bridge because Sunday is Disasters day for Verboten where DJ Sneak continues the circus act at the Loreley (64 Frost). Rest up my friends, a great weekend is in store!

Lost in the Groove on Cinco de Mayo

You know it’s a good night when you don’t leave until 7:30am. And now every time I prepare to go District 36, I know it’s going to be a late night, but a great night. Without exception, Cinco de Mayo delivered without a doubt. Rumors are holding true so far that this was the last techno show for a while, with the onset of summer. Bummer because I know I would love some hard minimal and techno to fill my summer nights.

Around 2am, DJ Vibe was seriously heating up the decks. With a perfectly numbered crowd – not too many nor too few – hitting the dance floor, DJ Vibe was clearly reading them well. Not only that, his mixing was quite interesting and unexpected – in a good way. When he held the bass from a track and built up the track for a drop, he never released that heavy bomb that everyone was expecting – instead he slowly built the bass back up until it gradually resumed its normal levels. So here I am standing, waiting for that wonderful techno drop that comes after each break, only it never comes. Normally, this would be frustrating, but DJ Vibe built it up so cleverly it was actually amusing and interesting to see how he would handle each drop.

When Carlo Lio took to the decks, the pace changed as well a clear difference in style. Around 3:30am I noticed the changes, and surely enough Lio had already switched places with DJ Vibe. While DJ Vibe was more subtle in his mixing and carried on a pace that was more fluid in energy changes, Carlo Lio brought in the attitude of what you would expect from a younger DJ – harder, faster. The pace picked up and the entire club was rocking out at 4am in the morning. No plays with the drop, when it came you knew it – hit the dance floor hard and kept the bodies moving.

Last to take up for the morning stretch was Cristian Arango. Keeping up the fast pace, Arango opened with a great track with truth speaking vocals about the state of electronic dance music: DJ Noir’s All About House Music. (Noir’s Africanism is also worth checking out.)

For those who haven’t given District 36 a chance, let me tell you I find it now my home. While a lot of clubs and shows are fun, not every one of them I feel completely happy. Every time I’ve been at D36 it’s been a magical night full of those techno bass drops I so crave to hear, that brighten up my week. Even the design of the club lends itself well to minimal and techno. No judgement, it’s just you and the dance floor and if you aren’t dancing then what are you doing here? Beautiful dancers spotlight the speakers interchanged with dancers in costumes only imagined by the depths of your mind. Just lose yourself in the music, and like Ben Sim’s track says move, move your body dance, dance your body – I want to go back.

Somehow this is the first I’m hearing of native Colorado prodigy Zach Heckendorf. The ridiculously talented singer reworks rap classics like Dre’s “Forgot About Dre” into acoustic hits taking his cues from rappers such as Aesop Rock (also one of my personal fave’s). He really goes in at 2:52 with his impressive spitfire…is it just me or does it sound like Ed Sheeran and Cris Cab had a baby? Really looking forward to hearing what else this guy has in store for us in the near future…

The Electric Beach Series hosted by Corona Light each Saturday at Santos Party House has been without a fail since the start. We’ve been covering quite a few of them, and can guarantee this is one of the fail-safe parties of Saturday night in New York City. As we’ve written each time, get there early!

A fine good looking Frenchman, Tristan Garner headlines this weekend’s episode of fun and debauchery, making this his first time in NYC. In his set, expect a lot of his own bootlegs and mashups, changing things around in songs that are already well known to us, like Feenixpawl’s In My Mind. With his new releases, and the work he’s done on remixes and bootlegs puts him towards the front of the progressive movement.

Santos Party House tomorrow on Lafayette be sure not to miss out the debut and a night of bangers.

Cinco de Mayo at D36

There have been rumors floating around that the lineups for District 36 will not be as techno oriented. Whether that be the case or not, this Saturday is still not an event to be missed. The spectacular line up they’ve been featuring with artists such as Dubfire, Luciano, and Nic Fanciulli, is now joined by none other than Carlo Lio & DJ Vibe with Cristian Arango late night. Love Dubfire? Love Carl Cox? Lio draws his inspiration from those monumental DJs. Head on down for another tech-house filled night.

Along with Carlo Lio is DJ Vibe. Hailing from Lisbon, Portugal, he brings a taste of Europe to the table. With that also comes an illustrious career starting when he was 15, DJing since 1983. This man is clearly no stranger to good music. He has recently collaborated with Victor Calderone, another dance floor legend. Check out his latest set on mixcloud to see what he is all about:

Carlo Lio’s latest post on soundcloud is just uber goodness. It’s a preview of the freedom to dance that D36 always enables. If you’re not dancing when you’re there, you’re the odd one out.
