MASH-UP MONDAY: Selective Hearing

I’m more of an original mix kind of guy but sometimes you can’t go wrong with a great mash-up, especially if you find the right combination. The lethal EDM cocktail, or what we call the “mash-up”, has been an essential tool for anybody trying to keep the party going. Even at the highest level, the most acclaimed of DJs do live mixing and mashing in hopes of keeping our ADHD/elitist ears aroused during the biggest festivals and events. However, some will argue that vocals tend to ruin the flow of the set, or that mashing too many songs too frequently you will lose your audience — Porter Robinson lost me in his Essential Mix set the other day whereas the Dutch enigma Laidback Luke always has me entertained (this is a whole other discussion).

As for the mash-ups, I’m sure you’ve heard most of these songs but hopefully not the combination of them. My favorites have to be the ‘Watch The Sunrise vs. Resurrection’ mash-up that I heard EDX drop during his No Xcuses radioshow, and ‘Replica vs. Mother Protect’, a mash-up that Dirty South made famous and was used at Swedish House Mafia’s legendary performance at Club MSG in New York. SO, if your Monday was mundane at every level, hopefully these mash-ups will set you up for a mid-week mega!
