Interview with Disfunktion (STS Exclusive!)

If you’re a huge fan of Avicii’s deeper progressive tunes of melodic builds and piano synths (think Tweet It), Hard Rock Sofa‘s heavy drops, and EDX‘s euphoric glow, then Disfunktion will be your newfound love. Hailing from Amsterdam, Dutch producers Barteld Frech and Mike Tielemans, or Disfunktion, are visionaries in the realm progressive house. They are signed with a very respected Swiss dance/house music label, Pinkstar, which has released bombs like Tim Berg’s “Bromance (Avicii’s Arena Mix)“, EDX‘s “Szeplo“, Albin Myers’There 4 You (Dirty Dub Mix)“, John Dahlback, Porter Robinson, etc.  There was interesting parallel between Avicii‘s supposed “Hello Miami“  and Disfunktion‘s “Galette” that I discovered through beatport, such that they were the same song. Mike and Barteld were kind enough to answer some questions I had for them, and even kinder in letting us what they’re all about.

STS: What producers have been your biggest inspirations and what types of music
have influenced your sound?

Disfunktion: Well, we came from the disco sample stuff, so Olav Basoski will always be a great influence.
His beats and sounds are always so loud and pumping! Besides Olav, we love what Avicii is doing
with melodies. We also love Steve Angello & Ingrosso, EDX, John Dahlback, Albin Myers. We are
really interested in bringing melodies together with big dropdowns..
Other music we listen to a lot: Miike Snow, Sigur Ros, William Fitzsimmons, Michael Cassette,
HipHop and even Hardcore :-)

STS: Do you have any big collaborations or notable shows/festivals coming up?

Disfunktion: We just came back from Miami where we played Nikki Beach and the National Hotel. That was
awesome. Right now we are really focusing on our project by terms of releases. We have a lot
of exciting stuff coming out on PinkStar Records (which is already like a home for us, track
wise) We have some different stuff coming out, some is trancey(trousey) some is more
commercial, but all will be big and loud :-) . Also, some great vocal stuff!

STS: Who do you hope to work with in the future?

Disfunktion: We would love to do stuff with EDX, Hardwell or John Dahlback, Albin Myers, Cost and Doray and of course Avicii, but he’s kind of busy at the moment, hahaha. Or work with guys whose sound is a bit different, but might work in combination with our sound. Like Belocca, Muzzaik, Tim
Green, but obviously there are a lot of great artists out there we would like to work with
some day. If they are into vocals, melodies and big sounds (and beer) then we are up for it!

STS: Are you guys aware of how sick your progressive bomb “Galette” is, and did you know
it was wrongfully named Avicii’s “Hello Miami”? How do you feel about it?

Disfunktion: Hahah, thanks! Yeah we liked making it, we sent it to PinkStar and they liked it also, but
wanted another track to compliment it, so Magna was born. That was a great EP.
We did see that it was named Hello Miami. Of course we saw it as a compliment! But it’s also
strange, cause when you are doing filtered pianos with synths it soon becomes the Avicii
sound. So that misspelling was kinda obvious maybe. But we still like to do Piano’s with
synths, so be prepared for more stuff in that category!

Take a listen, and show them some support and get their tracks on beatport!

BOMB ALERT: Here’s a preview of their upcoming heater, “Lost All The Ways”, which is “Magna” with vocals. Also on it’s way is a remix to one of my personal favorites, Hard Rock Sofa (fuegs on fuegs)

Disfunktion ft. Nicky Prince – Lost All The Ways (Magna) by RealDisfunktion

Hard Rock Sofa & St. Brothers – Myth (Disfunktion Remix) by RealDisfunktion

Disfunktion – Galette (Original Mix) Obviously my favorite, this song just hits it right. The perfect combination of their filtered piano builds and synth-heavy drops makes it suitable for pregaming, chillin’, and studying. FUEGO.

Disfunktion – Magna (Original Mix) As they stated, this really is an exuberant complement to Galette — with those blissful synths putting this track over the top. Get pumped for the vocal release!

Remaniax & Disfunktion – Bestiole (DJ Groover Mix) Though is track is older, it has a build similar to “Teenage Crime (Axwell & Henrik B Remode)” with a twist Hard Rock Sofa’s “Immersing“.

Disfunktion & Max’C – In The Sunshine (Original Mix) I’m lovin’ the dark progression that swiftly transitions into Max’C's commanding yet soulful vocals. Killer track!

John Dahlback – Back To The Dancefloor (Disfunktion Remix) These guys are true sound engineers — a hip-hop style rapper (a poorman’s Flo Rida) meshed with refreshing melodies and a fruitful flute undertone.

Tune Brothers & Corey Andrew – Into The Fire (Disfunktion Remix) Dance into the fiya fiya fiya and listen to the fuego!!!

I have a case of Disfunktionism now, you can form your own conclusions after listening!

Mickey T – Be Free (Disfunktion Remix)

Disfunktion – La Barbara (Original Mix)

Disfunktion – Desolee (Original Mix)

DJ Metzker Viktoria – So Amazing feat. Mitch Crown (Disfunktion Remix)

Ay yo, we got bootlegs on bootlegs, das wassup!

Eric Prydz – Pjanoo (Disfunktion WMC Bootleg) This is a monster of a bootleg, Pjanoo in itself is legendary, Disfunktion adds to it an astral flare.

Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso – Partouze (Disfunktion Bootleg)

Ransom – My Dance (Disfunktion Bootleg)

Rank 1 – Airwave (Disfunktion Bootleg)

Vincent Ingrosso – Flowtos (Disfunktion Bootleg)

Please show them some support and get their tracks on beatport!
