Excision: Electric Zoo Spotlight

With great bass comes great responsibility, and with great responsibility, Excision is there to answer the call. Most would consider him the king of heavy-hitting, huge wobbled dubstep. Coming in with historic hits like “Heavy Artillery” and “Swagga”, there is no denying that Excision has mastered the thick and juicy wobbles that modern dubstep fans have come to expect.

He has produced legendary original mixes with huge names such as Bassnectar, Downlink and Subvert, but most often (and for the biggest tunes) with Datsik. Just now, I was asked to turn down the volume on debatably one of their biggest remixes, “Teflon” by Kelly Dean. The duo started making tracks in 2009, starting with the Swagga/Invaders EP. In a time when “swag” was just appearing on the scene, Datsik and Excision hopped on the opportunity to rep the swag side of the dubstep world. Later that year, the two premiered their choppy, Asian themed tune “Boom”. It was then that the hits started to spill out with their most recent remix of Noisia’s spacey “Alpha Centauri”.

Excision has really helped dubstep gain footing in the music world, while keeping it the same underground demon that enthusiasts and producers alike have come to appreciate and love. He has influenced an entire generation of teenage producers trying to mimic his sound. If you go on Soundcloud, type in Excision, you will find tons of amateur remixes (not all bad) and artists trying to share in his fame. Up until his 2007 debut he showed off the aggressive side of dubstep–a side people had never heard before– which left people begging for more. Teaming up with Datsik only greatened his prowess in the dubstep world as he succeeds greatly in every musical venture. He has also been toying around with drumstep, and tracing back his roots to Drum and Bass.

Seeing Excision live is like a trip through time and space, I’m going back for my second viewing experience on September 9th, but I wish I could see his set with Datsik at EZoo (3:00 PM @ Hilltop Arena on Sunday). Make sure to check it, you really won’t regret seeing these two legends of the genre.
