Sub Focus: Electric Zoo Spotlight
Well hello! I’m Will and over the next few days I’ll be telling you which artists hailing from the world of dubstep (and such) you NEED to see. Today’s installment, Nick Douwma British DnB sensation better known as Sub Focus.
Upon first glance, Sub Focus may not be a familiar name to you. If he is, then I don’t even need to bother telling you that he’s been producing all sorts of music, ranging from house to Drum ‘n’ Bass to dubstep for 8 years, really showing his strong skills in DnB. I don’t need to tell you that he’s linked up with Chase & Satus, Pendulum, and Example for original tracks, and that he’s remixed Rusko, Dizzee Rascal, DJ Fresh, and the legendary Basement Traxx, all in stunning fashion. Sub Focus has mastered the speedy breakbeats and high powered bass that DnB has come to be known for, and he has garnered the respect joining the ranks of Goldie and Pendulum as kings of the genre.
In 8 (bass filled) years, he has gone from simply hearing his tracks in a small British club to performing them himself on the main stage at Glastonbury. From the beginning, starting with drum and bass, moving up to many more genres in the scene, all of his efforts thus far have received approval in the cutthroat world of electronic music. His story starts when a friend of his showed him a tape of General Levy’s pioneer single “Incredible”, he was instantly enchanted with the breakbeats and sounds he was faced with. Inspired to make his own, he released a few tracks that were eventually signed by DnB giants, Ram Records. Still with the record company, Sub Focus is creating tracks of all subgenres to keep improving his name.
His live performances are nothing shy of excellent. He sprinkles his sets with bits of unreleased goodness, as seen in the clip below, dropping an unreleased dubstep track at Ultra.
Between his live sets and his originals and his remixes, Sub Focus is definitely an artist you should look to see at EZoo. Listen to his tracks below!
