Flashes of a Multidimmensional Talent: Rachel Platten’s “You Don’t Have to Go”
This video of Rachel Platten’s live performance at Rockwood Music Hall truly speaks for itself, and so I am going to keep this post brief.
Rachel drives the music with her ability to play the keys. Rachel also drives the music with her voice, which has equally enjoyable flavors of pop and soul. This description would typically be enough to convey the abilities of a successful artist.
Luckily, for fans and general music appreciators, some notes on the piano and crisply sung lyrics are merely the beginning. Rachel really grabs your attention with two additional talents.
First, she has a confident and energetic stage presence that doesn’t overwhelm her audience. The vibe she generates is both natural and contagious, and makes the listening/ viewing experience much more enjoyable.
Secondly, she seamlessly intertwines a mixture of beat-box and scat singing. Anyone who has tried to do this at home knows how difficult a skill it is to master, and yet Rachel effortlessly infuses her music with a unique jazzy feel. This is just another personal touch from her repertoire. Let’s hope they keep on coming.
