Spotlight on Guti
Playful. That’s the first word I can use to describe Guti. Next I would say full of fervor and a vivacity for life, characteristics that tend to elude many Americans. We somehow get caught up in the minute and mundane, Guti did not. The fact that he has had his hand at so many different genres of music is a testament to his exploration and the curiosity that drives him forward. He’s not afraid, he doesn’t hole up in a single genre, and burrow himself a comfortable lair. Guti goes into the unknown, and each time has given him amazing results – his talent has never failed him.
Rising quickly from the unknown, Guti’s star is shining quite bright and the future still holds a lot in store, especially in EDM. Innovative in his style, Guti brings in different influences from all over South America and Europe as well. He’s changing the landscape, putting more instruments into the mix, going beyond just the mixer. I’ve mentioned previously on my review of his work, I definitely appreciate an artist who brings in the analog and ties it in with the digital. It seems almost counterintuitive that electronic music could use classical instruments to get a breath of fresh air. Therein lies his genius however, where the mixture of old and new do not clash, but harmoniously come together. While there are other artists or djs who have incorporated instruments, I feel it is not the same extent that Guti does. Having grown up learning countless instruments, his analog background holds a strong presence which sets him apart. When he talks about his music, this sentiment becomes more so apparent. After all, how many DJs do you hear sit down at the piano instead of the turntable?
