Brooklyn-based Atypicals were born in 2009 out of a shared love for house, avant-garde electronica, and good old fashioned indie rock ‘n’ roll. From surprisingly typical beginnings, they took the road less traveled, straying from the rigid and often lifeless production techniques of their contemporaries. Atypicals have since evolved into an unpredictable, genre-bending alternative dance juggernaut, putting out track after track of high-caliber, high-octane electronica that is equally intellectual as it is danceable. To boot, Atypicals are an actual band, playing actual instruments, which they incorporate with computer-based production techniques. So when it was to be reworked, rewired, and revamped with an electronic stamp – my expectations were for it to be nothing less than inter-stellar. And how right I was.

We begin with an exotic revision provided by Star Slinger featured on the Marriage EP.Marriage (Star Slinger Remix) by Gold Panda

Then there’s the acoustic variation brought by Forest Swords, blending a spacey dubstep backdrop reminiscent of a sound featured in the Atypical’s track Thriplet.

In this next SOS JAPAN installment more extreme athletes talk about what Japan meant to them. Watch Teton Gravity Research's Daron Rahlves, the worlds best downhill skier and Chris Benchetler, a professional skier speak, shred and indorse this charity sponsored by Platform H. The music is new track Thriplet by the Atypicals.

Though the earthquake in Haiti was the catalyst for the creation of Platform H, now the organization is much expanded beyond just disaster relief into supporting young socially conscious entrepreneurship. The SOS Japan began with a party and silent auction at 1Oak last Wednesday and will continue hosting events around the country. This Wednesday Jackson Hole will host the next benefit.

Silverlake to Soho is here to provide today’s hottest up and coming talent in today’s music scene on The Morning After Tour. The tour is set to take place from April through August, on a mission to provide the freshest shows, all over the nation. The Meet the Artist Series has been designed for fans to get to know the artists on the tour, and easily access all of their best music.

Every Wednesday, a different artist from the tour will be interviewed, and a podcast of the interview will be posted here, along with that artists hit songs.  So when your favorite artist finally hits the stage, you already know all the words. Stay tuned for part one of the series starting tomorrow! So, whose it gonna be?

Atypicals have recently released their new single ‘Lovedrug’ and let me tell you …
It’s pretty much amazing.

We’ve been huge fans of these guys since they dropped their 5 track EP with the help of Digiraatii. They bring a certain “je ne sais quoi” to their sound – in that, I’ve never heard anything quite like it. It has an electro-pop vibe with a delicately jazzy touch. Throw in some hints of electro-house, raunchy electro-synth lines, and a saxophone and you have yourself a party. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing them live a few times and it only cemented my opinion. Seeing all the elements of their music flow seamlessly together right in front of you is a rare gem.

With that, GigMaven’s CMJ Showcase is coming up this Tuesday at the Canal Room (NYC) and you’ll have a chance to see their craftsmanship yourself.  I GUARANTEE you won’t be disappointed. They’re opening up for the headliner Drop the Lime. How can you refuse?

A year and a half ago, I was sitting in the living room of my shitty apartment with Vince and Hollywood, listening to Cut Copy‘s album In Ghost Colours. Until that point, I had been a folk and indie rock guy, a la Bright Eyes or Beck. But something changed in me that day  - something monumental – when Vince threw on Strangers in the Wind. What amazed me most was Cut Copy’s “full band” take on electro, and how seamlessly they pulled it off: swirling, psychedelic guitar lines wove between weightless, cosmic synthesizers, while Dan Whitford’s tastefully imperfect voice floated above it all. To this day, I credit Cut Copy with getting me into the house scene as I started working with Atypicals.

So the real question is, when will Australia’s Cut Copy start crushing in the States? With tracks like Hearts on Fire, Lights & Music, Nobody Lost Nobody Found, and of course, Strangers in the Wind, it’s beyond me why they haven’t had much recognition on our side of the pond. Check ‘em out. You owe it to yourself.
