Fillmore Experiences the Avicii Craze

Class may have started on the 4th at the University of Michigan, however Welcome Week part 2 kicked off with Avicii at the Fillmore in Detroit. Thousands crowded the sold out main floor and even spilled onto the balcony, each kid going crazy as all their favorites dropped. The new pop phenomenon has basically everyone screaming LEVELS! in anticipation of the track. Had myself a little jump for joy when Avicii dropped Deniz Koyu's Dangerous remix which always stops me in my tracks.

Opening for Avicii, we had Yos on the decks, giving a deep house set that transitioned into a more progressive one. By the second half of his set, the entire crowd was jumping up and down getting warmed up to the tracklist he was dropping. I almost dropped my camera when he dropped Chemical Brothers' Galvanize - what we would now call an oldie but goodie. Along with that he dropped his remix of Nadia Ali's Pressure, her vocals carrying across the stage and into the waves of people.

There was certain debate between a few of us - we were trying to decide to whether Avicii's performance at Bert's Warehouse or Fillmore tickled our fancy more. It somewhat came to a draw but you can always compare setlists. Luckily for those looking we have a pretty complete setlist for Avicii, kept track of by our own writer Dan.

Avicii hits Detroit for a Round Two

Only a few months ago, Avicii graced Detroit for the first time. Many of us were quite taken aback by the much improved set that he performed, his not quite stellar set earlier in Ann Arbor was still fresh in our minds. It seems that third time's the charm as he comes back to ring in the New Year on January 5th at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit. Fillmore, has housed a lot of the city's major EDM acts such as Bassnectar, Major Lazer, and Chuckie.

Once more, Yos is opening up for Avicii and us house and techno heads are in for quite the treat. Check out this post where we have listed some of his best tracks and a little bit about him. Hailing from Detroit, he has opened for major acts such as Gabriel & Dresden, Lee Foss, Oscar G, and now holds a residency in Pontiac at the new club, Elektricity. If you have been haunting Detroit club spots lately, more likely than not you have seen him open. So take a second to check him out.

Avicii, well at this point, if you haven't heard him well, you must be living under a rock. Already a few of his tracks are playing on the radio, not to mention small bars everywhere. From frat parties to major stadiums, Avicii's happy piano synths have been spreading across the US. Seems that a party is not complete without "Levels" or "Fade into Darkness."

Either way this party at the Fillmore starts with doors opening at 6:30pm and going on until 12am. And if you're a youngin electrohouse head well it's your lucky year - its 16+. This is a part of Avicii's House for Hunger tour in an effort to end hunger and his first stop, is the US.

STS Top 100 Tracks of 2011: 91-100

Silverlake to Soho is proud to present to you our top 100 tracks of 2011. Featuring a top 50 of 2011 is an already daunting task for an EDM blog to do, but a top 100, really? I bet you're thinking that the quality slowly diminishes after 50, but as you will soon see, we probably could've gone up to 150. With the help of a few knowledgable ravers, legends, and friends of mine, I think I've conjured up a rather respectable list of tracks that represent 2011, thee MEGA in terms of releases. By top 100 "tracks", I will more specifically be referring to mainly the EDM subgenre of progressive house. Why mainly progressive house? Based upon the endless quality releases of progressive this year, and for EDM all across the board, it would be virtually impossible to include other subgenres.

Other reasons why I want to stick to progressive are:
1) Although I appreciate Trance considerably, I have not followed trance extensively enough nor do I believe that I'd have a credible offering of opinions or selection.
2) It was also a great year for electro house, but I feel that there wouldn't be enough to room to throw that into the mix (with exception to a few producers).
3) Although you know I love an occasional fucking tech bomb by Richard Dinsdale or Pleasurekraft, tech house just isn't in popular demand at the moment!
4) Minimal/Techno - Sorry but I haven't dug that deep yet...
5) Dubstep...no thanks, I don't like having seizures on the dancefloor.

What were some other factors taken into consideration?
Popularity was obviously a huge factor. There are some tracks that undeniably reached the entire EDM spectrum and beyond. Call it commercial or radio friendly, there are those sing-along anthems that moved the masses to create one giant auditory synapse. Whether it be for good or for worse, anthems are what induce the EDM community to expand.
Festival Fuego. Some tracks were straight up festival staples this year and were the base ingredients that every big name needed to have in their sets. Regardless if we already heard that track 5 times that day (Camera's ready, prepare to flash!), we would still give out the same reaction. Household names in the industry and their support for certain tracks also play a role since they are the trend setters of EDM. If the track has been circulating into a lot of big name sets, then chances are it's probably a good track!
Diversity of sound (despite the list falling mainly under progressive) and range of artists. Sorry Avicii (and his fanboys), but we definitely wanted to showcase a bit of everything, ranging from feel-good, bigroom, trouse, clubby progressive, melodic/airy smooth, tropical fuego, and emotionally driving tracks. A track doesn't have to be an in-your-face, synth-happy, bass-heavy banger to be a top 100 track.
Crushability. This is self-explanatory.

Is this bias? Abso-fucking-lutely. A lot of these tracks represent my personal taste and are from some of my favorite producers. I've invested a lot of time in posting features like Fuego Fridays, so I believe my input is well-deserved.

So take these with a grain of salt, as music (especially EDM) is very opinionated. This is intended to create a forum of discussion about this past year's releases! So if you have anything on your mind, please comment below.

#100 (Tie) Gareth Emery - Stars (Hardwell Remix) and DJ Fresh feat. Sian Evans - Louder (Hardwell Remix)

This year Hardwell was a bigroom machine who was pumping out crushables in the form of original mixes and remixes left and right. Although there were many great tracks like his remixes to Rebecca & Fiona's "Boy", Martin Solveig & Kele's "Ready 2 Go" and Tiesto's "Love Comes Again", these two were his top two that I wanted to squeeze in at #100.

Hardwell's remix to Gareth Emery's "Stars" was released earlier this year on Emery's Northern Lights Re-Lit album and is a track that showcases that classic Hardwell sound before he blew up with "Zero 76" and "Encoded". Go back to his earlier releases like "Smoke","Voyage", and "Move It 2 The Drum" to take note of that clubby-progressive feel and those signature drum kickers. Rocked out by Gareth himself during his set at Electric Zoo this summer and by Cosmic Gate at Ann Arbor, this is definitely a track to get the blood circulating early on in a set.

Although not officially released on Beatport, Hardwell's remix to DJ Fresh's "Louder" appeared in my library sometime in mid July. This track features Hardwell's more evolved bigroom progression with an unforgettable thunderous drop which he draws from later on in his "Levels" bootleg. Also when I saw Nicky Romero drop this live at the Mid in Chicago, it was kind of hot.

#99 Arno Cost - Lise (Original Mix)

Although Sebastian Ingrosso had a relatively quiet individual career (besides his 2011 contender "Calling"), his label Refune sported some of top progressive smashes such as this track and Deniz Koyu's "Hydra", which killed it at Swedish House Mafia's legendary performance at MSG. The young French producer has had a solid year with Swedish House Mafia dropping his track during Masquerade Motel and Avicii dropping it at Ultra Music Festival. Cost also has some solid remixes under his belt such as his "Titanium" remix (the best remix out of the package in my opinion) and his remix to Moby's "Lie Down In Darkness". "Lise" is a meandering progressive tune that slowly charges you for an epic siren unveiling!

#98 John Dahlback - One Last Ride feat. Erik Hassle (Tommy Trash Remix)

I swear this Tommy Trash remix cracked our top 100 before it was unleashed by Swedish House Mafia at MSG! Similar to Hardwell, Tommy Trash was a machine programmed to deliver electro crushables on a consistent basis. "The End" and "Future Folk" were some of the best tracks this year as you will soon see. Although hard to describe, his spastic/glitchy sound was very distinguished in his remixes. And at times, it seemed like all of his remixes were a bit too similar due to the sheer volume he was producing at. This track however, features a dreamy and coquettish progression to perfectly complement Erik Hassle's yearning vocals, of which culminates into a cacophonous and gritty electro bite!

#97 Laidback Luke vs. Example - Natural Disaster (Extended Vocal Mix)

Due to some mediocre remixes, some might say that Laidback Luke hasn't had a great year but I will argue the exact opposite. He has what many of today's top DJs do not possess -- style. It's not a bad thing that I know exactly what to expect at a Laidback Luke set -- an unpredictable and edgy set that nevertheless will always consist of FUN and energy. He truly is a performer and is an absolute monster on the tables, not to mention he's hilarious to watch when he does all those LL hand gestures. If DJ Mag were truly based on DJing skills, then Laidback Luke would be a top 5 DJ every year. I never hear the end of it from my friends when they say that LBL had one of the most legendary sets at Governor's Island over the summer. It was so good that as soon as Benassi came on stage, half the crowd had left already. As for this smasher, this track is a chaotic yet beautiful natural disaster with an epic piano build and high octane drop! In addition, Example’s flow and energy perfectly suits Laidback Luke’s signature sense of progressive urgency.

#96 Avicii - Street Dancer (Original Mix)

I am by no means an Avicii hater. In fact, I bet we have put up more of Avicii's tracks than anyone else. There's no doubt that Tim Bergling aka Avicii has been the King Midas of 2011. Most of his tracks fall under that uplifting feel-good house category but we have seen a darker progressive side as well. His output in "Street Dancer", "Snus", and "Jailbait" is a side of Avicii that I really dig, with more of that Tim Berg style than Avicii. This Vicious-released track though is a very unique track that I like to call jungle fuego (there's only a few of these). It features exotic bird-like chirps and whistles that transition between a darker club beat. Unfortunately, I don't think the plaid man has ever played this track live, so if you have a video please comment below! I also recommend that you check out this nasty Street Dancer (Whelan & Di Scala Remix).

#95 Deniz Koyu - Hertz (Original Mix)

There's a new authority in EDM, his name is Deniz Koyu and he possesses some amazing productional skills and is Fedde Le Grand's big promise for next year. No worries Fedde, because we are already sold on him as his aggressive yet uplifting sound has received further praise from the likes of Tiesto and Axwell. His tracks "Hydra", "Tung!", and remix to James Blunt's "Dangerous" absolutely massacred the dancefloors at Club MSG. I couldn't be happier for Deniz, he definitely brings a very refreshing and sophisticated sound to progressive. "Hertz" represents a balanced combination of his signature sound. It draws on upbeat elements from his festival anthem "Tung!" and softer elated melodies. If you want to learn more about him, be sure to check out our interview with him!

#94 Tiesto & Mark Knight - Beautiful World feat. Dino (Original Mix)

Mark Knight and Tiesto are arguably two of the most prominent and influential figures in tech house and progressive house respectively. Tiesto is even regarded as the world's biggest DJ/producer, who has recently started up his own clothing line called CLVB LIFE and soon-to-be radio channel called Tiesto's Club Life Radio Channel exclusively on SiriusXM in early 2012. The lethal combination of the two creates for a fervent and rapturous masterpiece. Released through tech-king Mark Knight's Toolroom records and with the aid of Dino's emotionally charging vocals, this track will definitely put you in the zone on the dancefloor and perhaps in your own beautiful world.

#93 David Tort - Jack It Up (Original Mix)

Steve Angello's SIZE Records absolutely crushed it this year and was probably my favorite labels as you will soon see. Spanish producer David Tort has also crushed it this year, remixing Norman Doray's disco-influenced progressive smash "Kalifornia" and releasing a massive track in "One Look" under Axwell's label Axtone. If you want to know an interesting fact about David Tort, he has become the only Spanish DJ to be invited to spin at Beverly Hill’s exclusive Playboy Mansion. As for his "Jack It Up", it's just one of those widely used tracks that's great for building the energy in a set. Sander Van Doorn really worked it well when I saw him at Electric Zoo this summer. Not to mention Tort samples one of my favorite all-time funky/old school rap jams "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa. Remember, an anthem is not completely synonymous with a top 100 track. And if our puritan Fratalie digs it, then it's probably worth your crushing.

#92 Fedde Le Grand - So Much Love (Original Club Mix)

Here at Silverlake to Soho you've probably seen the name Fedde le FUEGO more often than Fedde le Grand. It's for damn good reason, because Fedde has had one hell of a year. Out of all the people who came to play at the University of Michigan this semester (Avicii, Laidback Luke, Zedd, Cosmic Gate, Martin Solveig, Hardwell), Fedde Le Grand was definitely my favorite. Not only because I'm a huge fan of tech house but because I'm a fan of style. When Fedde dropped his "Paradise" remix thirty minutes left in his set, I knew he was about to go on a straight tear the rest of the way. Sure, I didn't know many of the tracks being played, but it wasn't about that. It was all about how he showcased his style. But back to the point, Fedde Le Fuego enriches DJ Falcon and Thomas Bangalter’s (half of Daft Punk) groovy original with his dexterous tech sound on Mark Knight's highly acclaimed Toolroom Records label. MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR INTERVIEW FEDDE RIGHT HERE!

#91 Grant Smillie feat. Zoe Badwi - Carry Me Home (Hard Rock Sofa Remix)

With the aid of Hard Rock Sofa's sinister and punchy sound, I promise you that Zoe Badwi's verse "Carry Me Home" will stick with you for a very long time. This remix is only meant only for the bigroom with its springy and menacing drop. When Kaskade dropped this mid-set at Identity Festival, I remember how the energy really shifted towards a darker side as he dropped Tommy Trash's "The End" soon after. You might remember that Tiesto dropped Tommy Trash's remix at Electric Zoo but I prefer this one much more.

Cazzette Crushables

Discovered by Avicii's At Night Management and responsible for their highly successful debut "Sweet Dreams" remix, Cazzette is continuing their hot electro tear. The Swedish duo made up by Alexander Björklund and Sebastian Furrer, possess great productional dexterity with a nice balance of dub, electro, and progressive. I saw them live when they opened up for Avicii in early September and was pleasantly surprised. Their technical skills weren't great, but I was very impressed with their selection. They played two of my favorite progressive tracks of 2011 -- EDX's swift, mercurial "Szeplo" and Third Party's soaring bigroom bomb "Duel". These guys have a bright future and have a really hot single "Killmode" coming up! By the look of their remix titles, it appears they have a sense of humor as well.

If you haven't heard of Acetronik, allow us to enlighten you. After fronting a band in high school with fellow Chron-Star Chobot (who we'll be spotlighting in the future), Barnett Lobel decided to put his musical talents to work on Electronic productions in 2009. His style transcends progressive house buildups into MASSIVE, bass-heavy electro drops. Last May, at age 21, he dropped his first official track, which was a collaboration with vocalist Sue Cho (who has been featured on numerous Porter Robinson tracks):

Signed under Big Fish Recordings, who sport unreal talents like Lazy Rich & Porter Robinson, Barnett got right back in the studio to work on his first official EP, "Make Me Feel Good." Acetronik is already blowing up and receiving support from prominent producers like Tiesto, Steve Aoki (who dropped "Make Me Feel Good" on an XM radio show a few weeks ago), Darth & Vader, and more. If you haven't heard of this up & comer, you NEED to familiarize yourself.

Next up is Distantt, Electro House producer fresh on the scene. We found a few of this homie's tracks last week and were immediately impressed. Since then, we have been talking up his status as an emerging stud to just about everyone that will listen. We didn't know this Chron-Star, which means you probably don't either. Before making this post, we stumbled across his Facebook page and found out a little more about his story. When we said we were gonna mention some young talents, we didn't think it was going to be this young. Turns out this little playa can't even drive yet. In fact, he's not even close. Chris Garcia is a 14 year old hailing from Texas. Ya you heard that correctly...FOURTEEN. This kid's talent is just stupid. Don't really know how else to describe it. If you are going to check out only one thing we post all year, choose this.

A few tracks from his first EP, "Hyperdrive," which were made at age 13. (how is this even possible?????) "Ballistic" is probably our personal favorite. Don't think many 13/14 year olds even know what complextra/electro house even is, let alone be able to produce it at a high quality. Anyways, just download this balla's tracks and you won't be disappointed.

Don't know much about this kid, except that he is 16 years old, and likes remixing Dada Life tracks. If anyone knows more about him, let us know because his only "official" release on Beatport is a Happy Violence remix, posted below. Managed to find another Dada remix he did, but it's not an official release. He's definitely got some talent, so were curious to see what else he's working with...

Another high quality (320 kbps) cut of ASH Pournouri's exuberant face-melter "Let Me Show You Love" has surfaced. Let me remind you that the track is not called "Enough is Enough" or "Don't Give Up On Us", ASH himself even posted a youtube video with the title "Let Me Show You Love" on his Facebook page. I feel like the only difference between this and the last (6:15 long) edit is that those dreamy chimes were taken out (unfortunately). Just when you think Avicii couldn't differentiate his signature sound any further (as in him running out of ideas), he really does deliver on this emotionally driving house track.

In case you haven't heard all the chatter regarding Hardwell's heavy take on "Levels" that was featured on his most recent episode of Hardwell On Air, here's the HQ (320) booty. I'm pretty sure he hasn't released the actual bootleg yet so it looks like everyone will have to work with the On Air rip. The chord progression is tweaked a bit to conform more to Hardwell's bigroom signature synths and the gritty electro drop is just downright disgusting.

Today is Friday, so here's the fuego that will provide you with sufficient fist-pumping fuel for your weekend crushing. It's been two weeks since my last FF post, so I have no choice to bombard you with the back-up on my iTunes. Hopefully I'll show you some new talent and new sounds along the way!

"Baltic" is Patric La Funk's latest bomb, which was released through Zouk Recordings, the house branch of superpower Armada. I have to give Patric La Funk massive respect on this tune, it makes me want to go on an epic space voyage. You may also recognize him from his beginning of the year anthem "Autosave" with Fedde Le Grand, "Time And Time Again" from Laidback Luke's Mixmash Records, and his respected Spinnin' Records smash "Blizzard".

Set to release November 15th through Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records, but available to you now on STS, is Tiesto and Aoki's upcoming collaboration "Tornado". The spooky builds and charging drops were definitely fashioned by Aoki. It's a solid track and is for sure something I'd like to hear live. Next up we have Tiesto's take on Coldplay's highly successful "Paradise". Seeing all these huge names like Avicii, Fedde Le Grand, Avicii, and Swedish House Mafia remix Coldplay probably made Tiesto feel left out! This remix is going to be massive!

Here's Afrojack's latest creation "Lionheart" which was released through his own imprint WALL recordings. I really dig the enticing interlude as it sufficiently prepares you for a blistering Afrojack'ed drop. I wasn't too sure about it at first but you really need step up the decibels to catch all the electro layers.

Continuing on our sizzling trail of fuego is Deadmau5's latest track "Aural Psynapse (2nd Edit)", which I'm extremely fond of because it really has that classic Deadmau5 edge. While we are discussing Deadmau5, here's an unreal remix to "Strobe" by Special Features. You may be thinking ehh, Strobe is untouchable, but trust me on this warm electro Mord Fustang-esque mix (great find by ChubbyBeavers).

I saw Martin Solveig perform last night in Ann Arbor at Necto and I must say, he fucking killed it. There were many highlights to my night such as his mash-up of A-Trak's remix to "Heads Will Roll" and "Zero 76", a ridiculous "Big In Japan" remix by Les Bros, and this vicious "Big Bad Wolf" remix by Dada Life. Also, I threw in Dada Life's vocal mix to the uncanny "Happy Violence" (you can check out Kaskade and Swanky Tunes' remixes on Beatport).

MASH-UP MONDAY: The Return of Mega

It's been ages since we did a Mash-up Monday (or commonly known as Bangers & Mash Mondays) and there's been some heavy mixing as of late. So while Vinny is still stationed under a rock, I'll make an effort to post mash-ups every week or every other Monday. Although I had all the tracks lined up for a Friday post, I failed to deliver the fuego because I didn't quite have enough time for a quality summary. Thus, it's likely that you'll see the freshest fuego from the past couple weeks on this coming Workout Wednesdays. Sorry for annoying you with all these alliterations but it's a great way in maintaining structure.

After seeing 20+live sets over the past couple months, I decided to round up the freshest mash-ups that are straight fuegs on fuegs. To no surprise, an absurd amount were mash-ups to "Flash (Nicky Romero Remix)", "Coming Home (Dirty South Remix), "Epic"' "Calling" and my favorite "Mush Mush".

This monster mash was rocked out by Tiesto during his college invasian tour at the Home Depot Center, which was the largest one-DJ gig in US History with 26,000 ravers. This track surfaced three weeks ago and is well overdue. Prydz' celestial progressive gem "2Night" is a current favorite of mine and I could only imagine how many people were singing along to Wonderwall.

People have been hunting down this track since Ultra and itwas rumored to be Wolfgang's remix to Bob Marley's "Sun Is Shining". It turned out to be a live edit and was never released by Wolfgang. Since releasing his album "Weekend In America" in late September, we discovered that the remix to Bob Marley was ultimately a mash-up of his "The Way It Was". Luckily, Flikhau5 has mashed this into a nice crushable.

With his monster set at Electric Zoo and the #24 rank from DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs to back it up, it's no secret that 23 year-old Hardwell is the complete package with his polished DJ skills and exceptional production IQ. Example's hit "Changed The Way You Kiss Me", which was produced by Mr. Club Swag Michael Woods, is seamlessly mashed with the dark and heavy "Epic" (released through Tiesto's label Musical Freedom) by the Dutch phenom.

Speaking of Hardwell, this next mash-up by Markob27 was featured on Hardwell's On Air as the demo of the week. Deniz Koyu and Johan Wedel's remix to "Dangerous" is one of my favorites and it may be one the best and/or underrated tracks of 2011 with it's sinister, big room feel. This Markob27 could not have hit the spot any better with his mash-up of Mush Mush and Epic!

Two newly released BOMBS that I was supposed to post last Friday have recently been mashed into one by DJ Jason Alamo. You guys know how much of a fan I am of The Russian Renaissance, aka Hard Rock Sofa & Swanky Tunes. Their recently released prog bomb "Phantom" is paired with Fedde le Fuego's latest anthem-caliber remix to Coldplay's "Paradise", which was the second track dropped during Avicii's stellar set this past weekend.

Trust me on these next couple smashers by Italian duo Promise Land. As for Guetta's electro-decked album favorite "Glasgow", Daft Punk's vocals are truly a match made in Heaven by Promise Land.

Avicii Brings out the Guns for Detroit

Congratulations to the new React Detroit. Likewise for Avicii, for one of the better sets he has played, especially in the times I've seen him live. And if you are ever in Detroit, Bert's Warehouse is a must. Let me explain.

Bert's, located in downtown Detroit on Russell street, has a deceiving store front of a small bar, diner, and lounge. One door however, takes you to the back - an enormous warehouse space complete with two bars, seating on the side, and a cafeteria in the back for the hungry ravers. Did I mention there is room? While the main crowd packs in towards the stage, there is ample room on the sides if you need to dance. It was my first time being there and from the lights to the stage and the sound system, I couldn't have been a happier camper. It's been used mostly for raves, Avicii being one of their first major mainstream electronic music artists.

So now the venue's great, what about the opening DJ, Yos? Yos was also great when I came in --building up the tempo with some deep house and easing the crowd into the excitement. As for Avicii, he was another story (I mean that in a good way). The previous times I have seen him play, I've had my reservations as him being a mainstream popular artist. And to be honest, his sets did not impress me whatsoever. When he came on playing Fade into

Darkness as his opener, I was thinking to myself oh dear we're in for another "one of those" sets. Well, luckily I had the pleasure of being surprised. I guess being in the birthplace of house music really inspired him to go dirty and not wanting to disappoint a crowd that knows music. He played a lot of harder, bass heavy songs, using his own synth happy tracks as breaks. Some of the tracks he dropped were his original Bromance (Avicii's Arena Mix), My Feelings for You, his remix of Robyn's Hang with Me, a hint of Green Velvet's Flash (Nicky Romero Remix) mashed into Coming Home, Coldplay's Every Tear Drop, and quite a few others. Perhaps why I thought this set was more successful than others is he did more mixing of his tracks into other progressive house tracks, and the transitions weren't so obvious. Practice makes perfect and this DJ still has a lot to learn, regardless of his productions. There were some solid bass drops that kept the stage shaking and vibrating with the beat. Below the crowd was going wild, reminding me more of a festival than a single concert. Avicii's encore with Jump Around just drove the nail in, adding a shock of energy to the crowd as all hands went up, bodies jumping high. The show ended at 2:30am, half an hour longer than the usual 2am curfew. I left carrying the energy - something you experience when you see a crowd so large and so into it, a sort of gratefulness for the music.

A full house packed Bert's, showing that Detroit's always ready for a good show despite Deadmau5 playing for two nights in Detroit that weekend as well. This was React's first show in Detroit and based on how the show was ran, I am looking forward to their productions. Coming up is Freaky Deaky at Bert's - the Halloween costume rave party with Claude von Stroke. It's nice to have another EDM power house in the area to bring in the best EDM acts and make Detroit even more of a home for electronic music, where it all began.

Now he's coming back to Bert's Warehouse in Detroit for a crowd that's twice the size and ready his set as DJ Mag's #6th best DJ on the Top 100 list. Belgian duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have been dominating my ear drums lately with this heavy progressive hit "REJ", which had tremendous success at Tomrrowland (judging from the aftervideo on youtube). Similar to Arno Cost's "Lise" and Thomas Gold & Axwell's remix to "Blow Up", this is definitely a track you want to hear on some big speakers. "Stomp" is another new track that was featured on Steve Aoki's latest Dim Mak compilation New Noise Volume 1.

If you haven't heard, "Antidote" is Swedish House Mafia's next project which features two-fifths of Pendulum -- Knife Party. It was first aired when Swedish House Mafia sat in for Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1's Essential Selection, which also featured Dirty South's next anthem "Walking Alone" and Thomas Gold's "Sing 2 Me". We've seen what kind of damage Knife Party can do, like their own electro-glitched spin to Swedish House Mafia's most recent single "Save The World" and Porter Robinson's "Unison". Here's a high quality rip (4:14 long and 320 kbps) from the Essential Selection. To be honest I'm not a huge fan of this track and I thik the dubby drop sort've kills the rest of the track completely. It'll probably have to grow on me.

Yesterday Avicii previewed yet another upcoming release that he's included on most of his sets for his North America tour. When I first heard this remixed mashed with Ash's "Revolver" on his Tomorrowland set (Revolver (Original Mix) vs Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (Avicii Tour Mix), I was once again blown away by pure auditory bliss. To no surprise, Avicii pulls it off with another feel-good bomb with heartwarming, face-melting melodies to turn any frown upside down.

Dirty South has had quite a year with his remix to Jeremy Olander's "Airsteela", Diddy-Dirty Money's "Coming Home" remix, Skylar Grey's "Invisible" and the progressive bomb "Alive" with Thomas Gold. This track hazardous, with its anthemic synths and emotional vocals.

Like the prior anthems mentioned above, this "Otherside" remix drives a debilitating buzz down my spine. Besides "Maximal Crazy", this track was the next highlight to my night for Tiesto's closing performance at Electric Zoo. And I thought the Tim Mason remix was amazing, wait till this drops in premium quality at full length.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside (Third Party Remix)(Radio Edit)

Gareth Emery's trance treasure "Mansion" may be my favorite track at the moment. This track is exhilarating to say least, with it's fluid rhythm combined with magical trance synths. Armin Van Buuren really set the tone for his set at Electric Zoo when he opened up with this heater. Give these other tracks a listen, I'm really diggin' the progressive house + trance = trouse.

Beat Service - Outsider (Original Mix) FUEGO I can guarantee you that the drop (3:10 in) will be the hottest face-melter you've heard in a while. It was also a part of Armin's trance arsenal at Zoo.

Along with Thomas Gold, Tommy Trash and Swedish House, Eric Prydz is another producer who I'm dying to see right now but apparently he's freakishly afraid of flying. Could that explain why Prydz/PRYDA/Cirez D is rarely here in the States?

Another track that I could never seem to remember nor find. Porter Robinson and Zedd like to include it on their sets because it's an absolute tropical SMASHER!

Avicii drops beats into our notebooks

Who says you have to be sad about the first day of school? It seems like everyone dropped their syllabuses and ran into our local American Apparel and bought out everything possibly neon in anticipation of Avicii's arrival. Without fail, as Necto's (Ann Arbor) club lights highlighted the crowd, it all seemed a blur of neon shirts reflecting just as bright.

Avicii in the past year has developed a following amongst most major colleges with frat parties (and frat stars everywhere) dropping his tunes for pregames. Local bars both here and in New York City have been playing his tracks almost religiously. Especially after doing his IDentity tour with Kaskade, his popularity has soared through the roof. So it only makes sense that he should come to a college town to appease his followers in their thirst for electronic music.

When he came on around 12:30am, there was hardly a soul left by the bar - everyone had migrated to the dance floor, packed in pretty tight. He dropped tracks such as Pendulum's Island Part 1, Save the World by Swedish House Mafia, Sweet Dreams, Levels, and a solid setlist that kept the floor jumping till the last minute.

This night kicked off a series of electronic acts to come at Necto this fall, following up with Laidback Luke on Sept. 21st. Be sure to watch for announcements because this will the electro-fall Michigan has been waiting for!

The bomb has dropped and boom goes the dynamite. Along with Guetta and Afrojack's "Lunar", this track may be the most anticipated collaboration of house superpowers. This track is simply fuego. The overall structure of rhythmic builds, warm piano strings and those giddy synths all seem like Avicii's doing just because we don't really know what Guetta sounds like anymore. Either way I respect what Guetta's been doing, so let the goosebumps begin.
