With music, we’re genetically encoded to share. Whether it’s to prove that you have better taste or simply to share an emotion, we all have that innate feeling to reach out and listen. The gift of a track title can be more powerful than any other physical gift received. Once we have that gift we listen to it over and over, run it through the mill and then we’re left on a constant search for something good and new, which is why we share. The onset of podcasts from major DJs has simplified the process for us greatly – find your favorite dj and then essentially listening to his podcast is what he recommends. You’re done, set. There is the outbound process but no conversation. The new online web app TurnTable.fm has come to fill that gap.
Turn table provides rooms with “dj sets” for as many as 5 different djs. You can create rooms with your own genre of music or join one that already has been made. Join the queue and step up to the podium with your list of pre-selected songs from either online or your computer. People vote on your tracks as good or bad which is how you increase your point score. Higher point scores enables cooler avatar (the coolest one is the Daft Punk avatars but so far only the creators of turntable.fm have that access). You take turns with one song at a time or however the rules are set up in the room you’re in, so everybody has a chance to add in to this mix. Feel like you’re not on the level to add to the musical playlist? No worries, just join a room to relax and vote on other people’s choices. You can see which rooms your friends are in and whoever you become a “fan” of .
Perhaps the part I was most skeptical of was the chat box. At first I saw it as a side option not really necessary, however as I became more involved and found a room I enjoyed to DJ in, I realized how crucial it really was. Here is where the magic happened. The little chat box was an open forum for discussion of new tracks, artists, polls, opinions. From personal experience in the room “Trance Out” I join about a dozen or two “usuals” who always come together in this room to show off their tracks. The moderators keep close watch to keep the quality of the tracks on par and in tune with the genre. The room draws an average of 80-90 people and sometimes partake in the ongoing conversation. Us “pros” like to show off to each other good remixes and how we feel out the crowd and the general trend (upbeat, vocal, slower, etc). Newbies are also welcome as long as they can keep up! Regardless of chatting it up which has led to a creating a community of music lovers, the mere exchange of tracks is quite impressive. The conversation is always kept fresh with a unity for the music we like and our given nature to share.

If you hear a song you like, it’s easy to find out what it is and keep track. While the track is playing you can add it to your own queue, find it on iTunes, Amazon, last.fm, rdio, or if you have one, spotify. Missed that chance? Right above the room is a tab that says “room information” where there is a list of the most recently played songs and how popular they were in the room. As you become an avid user of TT, be sure to check out the extension for Google Chrome that allows you to see who liked or lamed your song as well as other perks. I can say that turntable.fm is addictive – the whole gamification process draws you in and you’re always in for new music. The chat moves so quick that you have to pay close attention in order to keep up with the conversation. It’s fun to see the same people return to your room and just play a few good tunes.

Fact: It’s hard to dislike good dubstep. Another Fact: It’s hard to find good dubstep. Now that we’ve established the facts, here’s some dubstep from a guy I’ve been following for some time, Bad/Wolf, aka Elai Shine.

A native of LA, Elai has been making dubstep for a bit under a year, and he has created a few unique styles ranging from housestep to glitch. He has a variety of tracks out that appeal to the dubheads and also the rage-a-holics. All tracks are downloadable and are for your enjoyment! His next release, Memory Loss, will be released through New Haven, CT’s Grappa Frisbee Records

I’ve never seen Mercury Lounge so packed for the early show. Nor have I heard an audience ask for an encore at the early show. Now that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, of course I don’t live there, but I have to say how impressed I was by the turnout for Other Lives and by Other Lives themselves. This indie rock “band” is less like a band and more like an orchestra; the sound is rich and personal. It filled the room and not in a “its way too loud in here, where are my ear plugs” kind of way. More in a “what are they doing here, they should be playing concert halls, stadiums, and festivals” kind of way. Kudos to whoever caught them at Sasquatch!, I am mega jealous. Someone hurry up and get these guys (and gal) to score a film. Their latest album, Tamer Animals, ~~could~~ should be the soundtrack to an epic western. Give em a listen.

MFNW is going down in Portland from September 7th to the 11th and tickets go on sale TODAY at 10:00 AM!! Max Vangeli hits the decks @ LAVO

LAVO NY is for sure not failing its EDM followers this summer – they just keep bringing in the best of the best!

This Thursday night is no exception as Max Vangeli comes to New York to heat up LAVO’s dance floors. Interviewed by MTV, Vangeli is now becoming a very well recognized EDM name especially after collaborating with Steve Angello and An21 on Pendulum‘s “The Island.” He is named DJ to look out for this year and is supposed to be coming out with an album this summer (People of the Night). Working with An21 (Steve Angello’s little brother) and the likes of Steve Angello, definitely infuses his music with the Swedish touch we so love to hear.

Having seen him play in Detroit at St. Andrew’s alongside An21, I am looking forward to watching Vangeli go solo at the decks on Thursday. I am predicting some epic drops and some very well known electronic bombs to fall – from “One” to “Island”, and perhaps some “Swedish Beauty”. From checking up on his twitter, there’s a very good chance his new remix of “Save the World” might bring the house down. It’s definitely a good night guaranteed

Rachel Platton’s New Single, “1000 Ships”

Rachel Platten’s folky voice, seems even sweeter when matched with her vivacious smile that shines throughout the video for her new single, “1000 Ships”. We managed to catch her performance live at Rockwood Music Hall. Her funky track is definitely fun and different, with fast paced piano notes in the background and a rather unusual tempo.

The indie-pop singer is currently on a nationwide tour promoting her recently dropped album, “Be Here” – a set of collaborations with top-tier production teams from all over the world. There is not a day that she isn’t booked and its hard not to see why.

Covering The Weeknd’s “High For This”, Collin McLoughlin lays his raw vocals over a sweetly strung guitar and the result is oh so refreshing. Leaving the audio effects out of this one, McLoughin bears his natural talent – which indeed is talent.

If you’ve ever listened to The Weeknd you know the songs are not easy to cover as the singer’s sound is very much his own, but McLoughlin succeeds in making this track hold the same impacting seduction as the original, but gives his own McLoughlin passion that we all have come to love.

Yelle In Los Angeles, May 21!

After seeing the French pop dance group Yelle live at Coachella, they quickly made my top performances of the 2011 festival. The lead singer, also named Yelle, is so freaking cute with her fit bod and fierce little bob, and her music is just as quirky and perky as she. Yelle had me jumping and dancing around in the 95+ degree weather, jamming with all the other sweaty and smelly fans you see here:

Sure enough, they had me feigning for more. On May 21 Yelle will be performing at the Music Box in Los Angles and I will be there for another round of sweaty dance moves. Join me!
