Known for their smash-hit singles In the Horizon, Digital Freedom, and Excalibur (as well as many others…), Finnish Progressive House duo Marcus Maison & Will Dragen bring us yet another festive jam by reworking tyDi’s Talking to Myself. Over the past few months, Maison & Dragen’s remix of Talking to Myself has received much attention from acclaimed EDM legends such as Paul Oakenfold, who used this track to open up his most recent episode of Planet Perfecto (Episode 71).

Gareth Emery, British EDM superstar takes on “Aviciism” with a “Ne-Yo/T-Pain-like” twist in his new track, a remix of Last Time by Labrinth. Often times remixes “cock block” the vibe of the original song, especially if the original track is not of the EDM persuasion (I’m NOT saying this is a bad thing), however, Gareth Emery was able to preserve the integrity and mood of the original, while adding a unique EDM flavor we all crave.

I’m out and about traipsing Chicago at the moment but I had to give some love to this remix. Audien had shown me the original which had me hooked on repeat already. It has that nice feel-good vibe that a lot of songs don’t carry as often as they should and a great melody to boot. After listening to a club version and radio edit, I was waiting impatiently for Audien to finish up his remix, spending long hours at night wondering how he will make this already wonderful track better.

Well I wasn’t disappointed whatsoever, in fact surprised and in a good way. Audien added some big room sound to it, mixing in the great melody and vocals and adding overall a new dimension and flavor to the track. Thus making me a happy camper to be able to have a mini playlist of three versions of this cheery song which I can repeat. It’s quite the happy motivator at the gym – check it out for yourself and send some love over Audien’s way.

Tritonal premiered this track on episode 58 of their radio show titled “Air Up There”. This blissful vocal trance gem attacks the eardrums at all angles, but be warned…this song has one of the catchiest vocal hooks you will ever hear. With just a few tweaks, Craig Connelly was able to boost Christina Soto’s mesmerizing vocal riffs as well as inject a vibrant instrumental drop worthy of accompanying such masterful vocals.

Vodka & Milk just dropped The Remixes Vol. II with collaborated tracks that are surprisingly tasty together…just like vodka and milk. In this exclusive interview, Vodka & Milk gives StS some insight in to the brain of a master remixer.

How do you pick which songs to remix?

Well i guess it all depends on what is really available to us. We have a wide range of taste in what inspires us at the time, so if a more contemporary song comes out with an acapella that we really wanna mess with we go for it but that is rare. So we usually end up with hip-hop acapellas just because there is a much wider selection to choose from then any other genre. For "the remixes" we really like to craft which songs can go well together and also just make sure its different every time.

How long have you been working on The Remixes Vol. II?

The project really was on and off. During school I actually major in architecture so i dont really have much free time, but yeah shutterbug is probably the oldest mix which we made about 7 months ago. My House came after that probably like 6 months ago, we had made that beat for an artist that reached out to us but that sort of fell through. And the other 3 were probably the most recent within the last 2 months those all clearly having a more down tempo vibe.


What equipment did you use to mix?
As far as equipment I have found Ableton just to be the easiest quickest way to get ideas down in the computer. Outside of that I wont go into much detail but it doesn’t stray from the typical stuff, a workstation keyboard for drafting ideas, and then a few drum machines.
It's been a while since you released new tracks. How has your style changed between previous releases and this one?
 
Yeah since it’s been so long our style and philosophy about our music has with out a doubt changed. You know we still make exactly what we want to make, but we also realized we just wanted to step away from everything being up tempo. Now that’s not to say we wont make any thing that is up tempo again, it’s just before hand we were focusing to much on making sure that everything was up tempo where as now its just whatever comes to mind. We want to make stuff that makes the listener focus on the production and how well it works with the acapella and that’s it. A lot of our old stuff we don't like to really listen to be honest but that just kind of comes with making new music, it’s actually kind of good.
You said you would be doing original tracks soon. When can we expect to hear those?
We have a shit ton of original productions that have accumulated in the last year that we have just held onto for our own original project, and for artists. We are extremely picky so there are certain beats that i don’t think we can ever release until we actually get them into the hands of the specific artists that they were made for. We have high regard for our production and just sort of see it as a waste of time to put it out if I know we are not in the right place yet to get the right looks. But yea we do really want to release some straight original projects soon even if its just mostly instrumental we have a few different ideas of things to come/are already in process.
We already know from your remixes you have good original beats. Will you have original vocals as well?
Eventually once we develop enough relationships with other artists i think something really special could be put together. Some of our original tracks have sample vocals from old records, but my dream is to take those and sort of use them as blueprints for bigger songs.
Can you play an instrument?
The best instrument the piano.

Ask the DJ/production duo DESIGNER DRUGS how many air miles they’ve logged over the past year and the answer requires more than a bit of calculating. “Over 300,000,” Michael Vincent Patrick referencing numerous spots around the world where the group has performed. “I have a really nice apartment in New York City, but I’ve only been there three days this month.”

It’s a testament both to the duo’s popularity and work ethic that that number may become the annual norm. After nearly 50 remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey to Annie to Thieves Like Us, the diverse electronic group, comprised of Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, is set to release their debut album HARDCORE/SOFTCORE on Ultra Records in February 2011.

Where past productions and remixes have been on the poppier end of the musical spectrum, Hardcore conjures up a darker, edgier vibe – think the throbbing, industrial-heavy opening club scene in “The Doom Generation” – yet still retains a melodic center on many of the tracks. “I think we’re making music for the apocalypse,” says Michael, only half-joking. “The state of society is at a place where people just don’t give a fuck and that’s what inspires our music.”

School hasn’t stopped the group from putting on memorable live sets as much as possible. Spend a few minutes at one of DESIGNER DRUGS’ live shows and you’ll see the normally humble pair, spurred on by the intense energy of their music, transform into a different beast.

OH Boys will be Boys…

Tiësto is at it again everyone, but with many more now! His new group, Boys Will Be Boys is a DJ group that includes all your favorites: Tiësto, Angger Dimas, and Showtek. On Tiësto’s new Club Life – Las Vegas Volume 1, he debuted this new supergroup. Bringing sounds from across the globe, you can hear some of all of their vibes; Tiësto’s sick clubby beats, Angger Dimas’s freaky electro house, and Showtek’s dirty dutch influences.

Many of the tracks below are from that Club Life, but “We Rock” should be kept in mind because it’s the first of many new tracks to come from these all stars. After listening, I know I’m not the only one who cannot wait for more songs from Boys Will Be Boys.

This new supergroup takes off the gloves for this one. This instrumental track is just the beginning for Boys Will Be Boys.

This track is a nice, catchy electro-house tune, but be prepared because Tiësto shows us how to get dark too with deep synths and perfectly placed cowbell.

Hailing from Paris, France, Joachim Garraud started his music career at the Academy of Music Percussion and Piano. After 7 years there, he decided to turn his head towards the bass of EDM. Throughout his career, he has landed many different shows and festivals across the globe. I first got a chance to see him this past Labor Day weekend at Electric Zoo 2010 in NYC. His energy smile, and happy-go-lucky attitude gets every crowd jumping. Joachim considers himself to be a Space Invader and loves filling his crowds with aliens.

Going to the Academy really refined his style, helping him create a new addition to his mixing. Joachim loves to travel with his Keytar and mix while playing his own songs and remixes through it. (For those of you who don’t know what a Keytar is, click here) Adding to his table mixing, this element surprises everyone who does not know it is coming. On top of his beats, Joachim remixes some of the best known piano songs as well as his own songs.

This video gives a pretty good insight to how he does it all.

Another dope aspect about Joachim is his new audio-visual software. During his latest tour, Invasion, he debuted these new programs that connect the visualizer behind him to his turntables and Keytar. He is a true pioneer of EDM and a next time he is in your area, you’ve got to see the “out-of-this-world” show he puts on.

This opener has got some great drum-lines that come in from outer space. Another signature of Joachim is his literal, “out-of-this-world” style. Making you feel as if you’re coming back to Earth, he straight drops you into the club to rave with this original track.

Now I used to love his original version of We are the future, but this 2011 remake with Marco G is my new favorite. Seriously, if you hate on Jock Jams, you need to rethink your life overall.

Another great opener I’ve seen Joachim use plenty of times. This 2011 remake is dope and would get any club started with its non-stop layering. In my opinion, bass kicks are better when they sound more like vocal BOOMS. And please do wait until the last 1:30 of this track. It’s well worth it.

Joachim feature Ze on this new track. Keeping with the science fiction led style; this smooth track has more than anyone would ask for. Flowing vocals, with hard-hitting bass is just what the alien-doctor ordered.

Some more brand new electro house that actually breaks hard halfway through. Layering vocals, synths, and drum kicks, Joachim and Roland really throw nice finale to this jam.

I just recently was able to see Harvard Bass for the first time this past Tuesday. He opened up for Wolfgang Gartner (a man, myth, and legend) at Necto Nightclub in Ann Arbor, MI. I was blown away, as also much of the crowd was, by his up-beat, hard hitting, bassy synths and electro that straight melted everyone on the dance floor. He definitely got the energy up to where it needed to be for Wolfgang.

Harvard Bass, also known as Victor Hugo Ramos, began indulging in the sweet sounds of house and electro by sneaking into clubs in Tijuana at the mere age of 16. It was said that he sold all his toys at this age for his first set of DJ equipment. As he started producing his own music at the end of 2007, he acquired the name, Harvard Bass. While some of his track display minimal sounds, he hits you hard with bass and synths that make your veins tremble in other compilations. Now hailing from San Diego, CA, Harvard Bass has been seen at many different venues. From the small club atmosphere, seen at his most recent appearance in Michigan, to festivals such as Wonderland and Electric Daisy Carnival.

Don’t let this first song scare you away. But seriously, who doesn’t love frogs with bass and lasers?

Adventure Club (Christian Srigley & Leighton James) has been causing a stir throughout the blogosphere ever since they dropped their silky dub re-vision of Brand New’s ‘Daisy’.

Recently, they’ve hit the studio — releasing 5 tracks with an Upcoming EP to hit the scene shortly. With remixes ranging from 1950′s classics, post-hardcore rock to the sweet electronic sounds of today Adventure Club truly encapsulates the idea, ‘no genre left behind’. While sure to never compromise the integrity of the original track, everything they touch turns to gold.
