After the release of his much anticipated project, “The Reverse Effect“, Young Prince releases the first visuals from the project. The namesake of the tape is a real winner, featuring a great beat from everyone’s favorite Brenton Duvall and smashing lyricism from Beau. Whenever Brenton links up with YP, they always bring heat (Strange Times is a perfect example, such a cool joint). This track, to me, shows that he isn’t just about tossin’ javelins and whatnot, but that he has a big heart and an open mind, made for dreaming.

It’s really good to see Beau YP consistently coming out with quality tracks, videos, mixtapes, because I really believe that he’s going to make it in this business.

Holocene- Bon Iver (Video)

“Holocene” by Bon Iver (real name Justin Vernon) comes from the self titled album (Jagjaguwar), as one of the lead singles. The song is a peaceful, serene entrance into Justin’s mind, giving the listener access into all of his thoughts and emotions. It is a recollection of thoughts, a realization in itself. A realization on a large scale, that we, as humans, are pawns in the great game of life. “And at once I knew, I was not, magnificent” starts off the chorus, a resounding message of the impact we have in the universe; minuscule in Bon Iver’s eyes.

The namesake of the song, a period of time in the history of the Earth, millions on millions of years ago, embodies the spirit of the song. The Holocene was a time in which discoveries were made about the growth of the human race that have impacted our way of thinking in the present, millions of years later. The Holocene was a time of building and discovery, exactly what Bon Iver is describing in the song. His own Holocene is dictated in this song, leading up to the epiphany that his role in the universe is inconsequential. A revelation on this scale is something that most people in life can never achieve, and for Justin Vernon to put his experiences into a song such as this, is simply marvelous. Bon Iver has successfully captured the human spirit into song.

The video that accompanies this song really tied it all together for me. The video follows a young boy, around the age of ten, on his own journey. The young boy treks through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Iceland; lush green fields, placid lakes, and black sand beaches. Director Nabil Elderkin took the message Bon Iver took and put it into a breathtaking trip, not only around Iceland, but through the mind of Bon Iver, personified through the boy. The young Icelandic boy and Justin are one in the same, really putting the meaning in perspective. Elderkin and Vernon take the viewer on a fantastic voyage through heart, soul, and mind that is simply…magnificent.

The Rap Up: What You’ve Missed

Jazz Cartier comes through in the clutch, dropping this extra tight track, the third leak off his upcoming LP, Losing Elizabeth. This track, along with another one of the leaks, Olivier Garden, is getting me really psyched for Losing Elizabeth, I’m really lovin’ what Jazz has been doing. The piano on this track, beautiful. He’s an interesting fellow, producing some real ass music. Read his story via THAT blog, follow him on Tweeter, and fan him on Facebook, I expect big moves from the Toronto prepster.

We at STS love Henny, and we love it even more when he continually cranks out new tracks that are even better than the first. How I Go comes in guns hot with some sexy female vocals from Cristina D’Amato, who hails from the DMV (like Henny), and then the dude just hits it home. Our boy VenoM dropped some nicely psychedelic visuals for his hit track, Orbital, off his recent Dopeness is a Virtue project. Directed and edited by Eustace Francis of NDGMag, this is VenoM’s first official video and it’s a big step for the kid from LA. Get at him on Facebook!

Chyron, aka Mr. Look Up When I’m Gone, is new to the site, sadly. He rocks a really beautiful, unique voice, that he shows off every chance he gets. He blows my mind when he spits, it’s melodic and it actually carries talent, something that is rare in young rappers nowadays. Oh yeah, he’s 19. Missy Modell shows us why she’s getting so much love…

As you all know, Missy Modell has crazy skills. She is energetic, enthusiastic, fun loving, and can work a crowd. Oh, yeah, and the girl’s got pipes.

This much has been established, and yet she keeps bringing her A-game, expanding her range, and blowing us all away, one performance, one song, one video after another.

So, I guess her most recent output is really just status quo for Missy. She took a number from Lil Wayne, and made it uniquely her own. Her acoustic cover of “How to Love” is vibrant, soulful, and oh so classy.

Give this one a watch and listen, enjoy, and get used to this new level of status quo… #Winning.

The Importance of Staying Young While Growing Up

Think happy thoughts, sprinkle some magic fairy dust, and head towards the second star on the right and straight on to morning.

If Never Neverland had a house band it’d have to be Walk the Moon, the Cincinnati based art-pop dance-rock group that is sure to make you lose your marbles. If you like Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, and the Killers, then it’s time to bring your inner child out, treat yourself to a happy meal, and dance like you’re trying to steal the show. The video for “Anna Sun” is a Peter Pan inspired journey to neverland, where kids can be kids and never grow up. It has everything, and I mean EVERYTHING — face paint, theater, friends, a public make out sesh, Jenga, black lights, slomo, hipsters, 90′s workout attire, finger painting, synchronized dance scene, sparklers, partying & key-tars (you can’t have one without the other). And all of these are in ONE continuous shot that lasts for over 2 and a half minutes. DAYYYYYUM. There’s enough party here to make @AndrewWK happy. The only thing lacking is some Nerf guns. I’m not sure if their band name is referencing taking the moon for a walk or the act of moonwalking, but I’d be willing to drink some Jesus juice and try both. I’m sure there’s a joke in here somewhere about the “lost boys” at Neverland Ranch…

In this acoustic performance, Walk the Moon says the song “Anna Sun” is about college (CHICKS FRATS BEER!). In addition to keggers and thwarted attempts to pick up women the song provides a sense of nostalgia that applies to much more — our universal youth. We’ve all been there (it’s scientific fact), and we all remember the innocence and uninhibited freedom we had as children. Rather than dwelling on the past, we are meant to re-live it in whatever liberating way we can. It’s ok to sing out loud, get dirty, and maybe eat something that’s been on the ground for 5 seconds — somethings we never grow out of. Even as we get older, it’s OK live the same way we did as kids. We may try to become full-time adults, but we’ll never lose our youth — not if Walk the Moon has anything to say about it.

Their live shows boast extreme energy, and how can they not with such catchy dance-rock? What intrigues me is the rumored face painting at live shows. Come check them out in Silverlake on June 3rd with Grouplove. Be warned, first 6 rows may get wet. Watch out Gallagher.

Elegant Complexity: Why “Simple Math” is anything but

Manchester Orchestra and I are friends.

Well not in real life — or on facebook as it turns out. But I DO follow them on twitter @ManchesterOrch and stalk…err–see them at live shows. So why am I talking all this “friends” nonsense? Well dear reader, it’s because Manchester Orchestra speaks to me — they talk to me as my deepest, closest friend would. I feel like I’ve grown up with them over the past three albums, witnessing a loss of innocence that has been acknowledged, accepted, and is beginning to be put in the past. They entrust me with their secrets, exposing themselves in their most stripped down state. And because of this, I trust them. So much so that if a broken, bearded Andy Hull asked me to get in his van, I’d do it. That’s trust people. Did I just make a literal band-wagon reference? I THINK SO.

The Atlanta based group’s third album isn’t just indie rock — it’s a progression. As a young group they have come into their own, commanding their instruments to tell a story. Rather than layering sound on top of sound, they use their tools to complement the thought provoking and often complex lyrics that have become a staple for the band. One of my favorite tracks is “Virgin”, weaving in themes of tarnish regarding “We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood. You build this up in one day to fall downward and rust.” Each member plays an intricate piece, guiding the vocals from gentle whispers to unabashed screams. The result is Simple Math, a concept album with the very heavy and harsh realities of frontman Andy Hull’s life. He allows us to see his lowest low, where he bleeds raw emotion as everything he has ever known crumbles around him. There is a striking and heartbreaking honesty at hand here. He is exposed. Vulnerable. Naked (SFW) We see the most private and intimate details of marriage, faith, and conscience. All of his mistakes and faults have been realized, and instead of trying to forget and move on, he relives them onstage nearly every night. We as an audience are getting lost with someone, and all we can do is listen.

Let’s get you started then. Here’s the video for the title track “Simple Math”. It does an extraordinary job of pairing haunting music with artistic picture, making it difficult for the audience (and possibly the band) to separate fact from fiction. It shows the simple actions and seemingly unimportant occurrences that form one’s life, and may ultimately be what they remember in the end. It is emotional and beautiful in all it’s Inception-esque qualities.

BWARMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMP.

So when you’re tired of hitting the replay button and need to see them in person, you can check them out June 2nd at the Music Box in Los Angeles.

Maybe if you’re lucky they’ll tell you about their run in with 50 cent.

So until they return my calls begging me to hang out, I’ll go on being a good listener. That’s what friends are for, right?

It’s almost that time of the year, here’s the list you need for wherever you are going on Spring Break this year. In case you forgot you can always send us recommendations via facebook or @silverlake2soho on twitter.

2009 was definitely the year of Gaga but we threw in a pretty chill remix of telephone featuring Beyonce. 2010 is probably going to be the year of Drake, and a nice send off for weezy. Most of this playlist was inspired by the Yacht Week 2010 video, which we’ll throw in at the end of the post incase you haven’t seen it already.

We also had to throw in more from Atypicals, which are back by popular demand. We should also mention our good buddy VC (@GoVince) is going to help out sourcing new music!
